Motorists will avoid annual EU price hike thanks to Brexit powers – InsuranceNewsNet

LONDON, April 25, 2022 /PRNewswire Policy/ —

Controversial EU Vnuk car insurance law set to be removed from UK law as bill passes Parliament.

British motorists will be spared a possible £50 annual increase in insurance as the government continues to grapple with cost of living pressures and uses post-Brexit freedoms to end a controversy EU straight.

A bill to remove EUVnuk car insurance law passed Parliament today (April 25, 2022) and will then receive Royal Assent to confirm the changes to the law.

EU the law could have required a wider range of vehicles beyond cars and motorcycles to have auto insurance, such as golf carts, mobility scooters, and quads.

This would have extended to vehicles on private land, meaning even people with home lawn mowers would potentially need car insurance. However, other insurance options are already available for people who need coverage on their private land, such as farmers.

Failure to enforce the law will prevent a rise of almost £2 billion for the country’s insurance sector, which would have translated into a potential increase in individual insurance premiums of around £50 per motorist per year .

EUVnuk car insurance law was dropped

transport secretary Grant Shapp mentioned:

“Dismiss this nonsense EU rule will protect the pockets of hard-working Britons as we continue to help ease cost-of-living pressures.

“It’s another Brexit win and I’m delighted this bill has rightfully passed Parliamentsaving billions of pounds in extra insurance costs and protecting our global motorsport industry.”

The bill was presented to Parliament by Stone Bone MP, who said:

“I am delighted that Brexit has allowed me to push a bill which could save the average motorist £50 a year.

“I am grateful for the help that Bureau of automobile insurers and the government provided in drafting the bill. My motor vehicles (Compulsory insurance) Bill is just one small example of our Brexit dividend.”

Vnuk would also have covered motorsports collisions, potentially involving vehicles ranging from go-karts to Formula Onewhich would have been treated as ordinary traffic accidents requiring insurance.

This could have decimated the motorsports industry due to additional insurance costs of around £458m each year. Scrapping Vnuk will therefore save the world’s leading sector from potential collapse and secure hundreds of thousands of industrial jobs in the process.

The CEO of The Bureau of automobile insurers (MIB), Dominic Claydonmentioned:

“The MIB welcomes the passage of Motor Vehicles (Compulsory insurance) Invoice. We have campaigned on this issue for a number of years and are delighted that the legislation needed to remove the effects of Vnuk has now been passed.

“Motorists will no longer face the added costs of future accidents on private land and accidents involving a range of additional vehicles – including lawnmowers and golf carts. This will save everyone money. motorists and will bring us back to the common sense approach we had before the Vnuk shutdown in 2014.”

In addition to the likely financial burden for UK road users, the Vnuk rules are seen as unnecessary as there are already insurance packages available to Britons which cover certain risks on private land.

Motor insurance will always be required for all vehicles on the roads or other public places. However, the removal of Vnuk means that insurance for vehicles used on private land is not required.

Egypt’s gig economy workers face challenges

Cairo, Egypt April 24 – Young men on bicycles and scooters ride through Cairo, Egypt’s sprawling megalopolis, dodging cars to deliver more than a million orders each day, with little physical or legal protection.

Egypt’s digital economy is growing as economic pressures drive more of its key population – educated urban youth – towards the gig-work model.

Engineer Mohamed Sherif, 37, joined online food ordering company Talabat as a bicycle courier in Alexandria three months ago because he couldn’t find a job.

“They’re bleeding you dry left and right, but there’s nothing else to do,” he told AFP.

In early April, couriers in Talabat called a two-day strike to demand higher wages, with only a fraction of the 12,000 employees.

The work stoppage, however, reflected the state of Egypt’s large app-based gig economy.

Inflation soared to 12.1%, its highest level in three years, while the Egyptian pound plunged to 18% of its value.

The mounting economic difficulties come as global commodity prices soared after Russia invaded Ukraine.

A courier who declined to be named said commissions had stagnated since 2020 at 9-18 Egyptian pounds (50 cents and $1).

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

“You can work nine or ten hours and not get enough orders,” Sherif told AFP.

After paying for petrol, oil and other expenses, “you might end up only gaining 30 or 40 pounds that day.”

In Egypt, where 60% of the 103 million inhabitants are under 30 and 14.5% of university graduates are unemployed, digital work platforms have attracted 100,000 to 200,000 workers.

Uber alone employed 90,000 drivers in 2019, all without contracts, insurance or social security.

– ‘Take advantage of vulnerability’ –

Fairwork, a University of Oxford project, worked with the American University in Cairo to assess the working conditions of seven of Egypt’s largest digital work platforms.

Uber, Talabat and grocery app Mongez scored out of 10, while ride-sharing startup Swvl – which made headlines for its $1.5 billion Nasdaq debut earlier this year – got only three out of 10.

Omar Ramadan, whose home maintenance and cleaning services startup FilKhedma earned the highest score at five out of 10, said working conditions are rarely discussed in the tech ecosystem.

“It’s very rare to talk about how much we’re paying people, whether it’s fair or not, whether we’re taking advantage of people’s vulnerability.”

A third of Egyptians live in poverty, and almost the same number are likely to fall into poverty, according to the World Bank.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

The average monthly family income is EGP 6,000 ($325).

Following this month’s strike, Talabat said in a statement that couriers earn around EGP 4,000 to 6,000 per month, and up to EGP 10,000 “if they work eight hours or more”.

But couriers say that excludes the cost of petrol – which has risen 3% in recent days – and payment and maintenance for the scooter or bike they use.

Couriers using motorbikes earn up to twice as much as those who make their deliveries by bicycle or on foot, Sherif said.

– A legal gray area –

Couriers also put their lives at risk navigating the chaotic streets of Cairo, where traffic rules are most often flouted and accidents occur almost daily.

Talabat Egypt’s public affairs manager, Asmaa Khalil, denied claims by some couriers that they did not have adequate insurance to protect them.

According to her, Talabat contributes to accident and life insurance, but the schemes are managed by external contractors who recruit and manage their couriers.

Bike courier Sherif criticized the method, calling it a way for employers to “get rid of the dirty work”.

Khalil said that legally, Talabat has “no obligation” to its couriers and only offers insurance and other benefits “out of goodwill”.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

For Wael Tawfik of the Legal Collective to Promote Labor Awareness, the best recourse for workers is to form a union.

But Sherif said it would be a difficult task for couriers to form a union because “unlike factory workers who all work in the same place, couriers only meet by coincidence”.

According to the International Labor Organization, only 13.6 million people receive state-funded social security benefits in Egypt, where 63% of the workforce is employed in the informal economy.

“Labour law, tax law, social security, it’s all unclear how the gig economy is supposed to behave,” Ramadan said.

“Everyone in the gig economy is in a gray area,” he added.

Rosalía’s 2022 tour, as her namesake suggests, is in support of her third studio album, MOTOMAMI. The album, which was released in March 2022, was widely praised by music critics and fans, who praised the record for its genre approach and experimental sound. Explaining the name of her album, Rosalía said Billboard after the album was released, “Motomami is the name of my company. When I was a teenager, I had a friend whose email account was “Motomami”. I loved the name and it stuck with me.

“I associate it with my friend and motorcycles. My mother has always had motorcycles, I have been riding them since the age of eight with my father. And a Motomami, well, my mom is the OG Motomami,” she continued. “There are so many Motomamis around the world who have inspired me. My mother, my sister, my friend Hunter Schafer. Motomami is an energy. Anyone can be a Motomami, Motopapi. It’s the way you feel. And also, it’s doing everything you can with what you have.

Before the release of MOTOMAMI, Rosalía alluded to the record’s feminist and sexually empowered themes during her November 2021 cover story for the inaugural issue of Rolling Stone in Spanish. At the time, Rosi expressed hope that MOTOMAMI would serve as a “counterweight” to the “macho and misogynist” stereotypes that often permeate the content and coverage of Latin music.

“I haven’t always found female figures who write more raw, especially in Spanish music or folk music. It’s easier to find these figures in English music than in Spanish music,” the Grammy winner said, adding, however, that these tropes go beyond music. “I also believe it’s not just about reggaeton. It is the reflection of society. If it happens in music, it’s because something is happening on a social level, in the real world,” Rosalía continued. “So we better ask ourselves what is going on and what else we need to do in this regard.”

MOTOMAMI is Rosalía’s answer to this call. And after dominating the airwaves and streaming services since its release, Motomamis around the world will finally have their moment to experience the album, along with a handful of their other hits over the years, in concert. Indian: the first American motorcycle brand – News

Ask a child to draw a motorcycle and chances are it will look like an American-style cruiser. Ask any Kiwi who our most famous motorcyclist is, and there’s only one name: Burt Munro aboard his 1920 Indian Scout.

While a certain 2005 film starring Anthony Hopkins stimulated interest in Munro and India’s history, it wasn’t until 2014 that the Indian Motorcycle brand started selling new bikes again. in shops.

Indian has a strong, if troubled, history. Founded in 1901, it quickly became a dominant force in the American motorcycle industry. However, after World War II the company fell on hard times and closed in 1953.

After various attempts to revive it, Indian finally found a solid home under the umbrella of powersports giant Polaris Industries in 2011. Now offering five distinct families of American-made motorcycles – plus the small FTR-Mini suited to kids – Indian is on the right track. .

With a line of modern cruisers aimed squarely at removing much of Harley-Davidson, Polaris went all out by shutting down its own Victory brand in 2017 to focus fully on Indian.

While sales volumes don’t quite match Bar and Sheild’s here, perhaps in part due to the vast lineup Milwaukee brings to the fight, the Springfield-based Indian Motorcycle company has come a long way since then. the revival of the brand.

FTR1200

Indian’s current lineup starts with the $19,995 FTR. Taking inspiration from Indian Motorcycle’s dominant American Flat Track bikes, the FTR offers naked sport riding with an array of technologies.

Built around a steel trellis frame and high-performance 89kW 1203cc V-twin, the FTR is currently the only American-made naked sport on the New Zealand market. Early examples sport a 19-inch front wheel in line with its flat-track heritage, but newer models now roll on 17-inch wheels that offer a wider tire choice.

Scout, Scout Bobber and Scout Rogue

The entry point to the traditional Indian Motorcycle lineup is, and always has been, the Scout family. With a price starting at $22,995, the Scout range is powered by a liquid-cooled 1133cc

V-twin and now consists of four different sub-models, including the Scout Bobber and the new Scout Rogue.

Chief

When Indian Motorcycle was first born, it was led by the Chief line of cruisers.

Recently updated, the Chief maintains its position as the entry point into the high-capacity (and downright stunning to look at) Thunderstroke engine family with an all-new chassis and lower price.

Now priced at $26,990, the Chief line offers raw American cruiser styling with plenty of scope to tailor the ride to your liking.

Chef and Roadmaster

Continuing the Thunderstroke family of engines are the touring-focused Chieftain and Roadmaster. Both retain the same chassis, but now sport larger capacity motors and more technology.

Indian’s glove-friendly Ride Command infotainment system is included with the Chieftain and Roadmaster, which allows for full Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Challenger and Pursuit

The latest machines to join the Indian lineup ditched the Native American-inspired naming convention as well as air-cooled Thunderstroke engines.

Priced at $41,495, the soon-to-be-arriving Challenger and Pursuit feature the latest in Indian motorcycle design language, technology, and the all-new, liquid-cooled 1768cc PowerPlus V-Twin engine.
