Prolific offender jailed for helmet theft – The Royal Gazette

Created: April 14, 2022 07:42

A ‘prolific offender’ has been jailed for three months after admitting breaking into motorbikes to steal helmets.

The trial court heard Maxwell Smith, 50, was sent to drug treatment court in September 2020, after pleading guilty to two counts of theft and two counts of property damage the previous year.

But Smith returned to court for sentencing yesterday after being removed from the treatment program when he was charged with another offence, which has yet to come to court.

The court heard that Smith broke into a motorcycle parked at City Hall and stole a motorcycle helmet.

He targeted another motorcycle the following day which was parked outside Coconut Rock on Reid Street, Hamilton, and stole two helmets.

The incidents occurred on November 24 and 25, 2019.

Smith told court in 2020 he stole the helmets because he needed money for food and told the court he had a drug problem.

But yesterday Lisa Trott, for the Crown, said: ‘The defendants appear to believe this is a victimless crime – the Crown disagrees.’

Ms Trott said Smith had committed theft offenses dating back to 1986 and asked her to pay $801 in restitution to the victims.

She also requested that he serve three months in prison for each charge of theft and one month for each charge of property damage, and that the prison terms for theft be consecutive while the others are served concurrently.

But Marc Daniels, for the defence, said consecutive sentences had been ruled unnecessary by the Court of Appeal unless the offenses had been going on for months.

He requested that his client be given a suspended prison sentence to give him time to pay restitution fines.

Mr Daniels said his client had also stayed out of trouble for most of his adult life – but warned that imprisonment could have a negative effect on his rehabilitation.

He said, “What happens if we send him to prison?

“Are we just sending the message that, despite her best efforts, we’re just continuing the cycle?”

Smith thanked the court for its help with the drug treatment program.

He apologized to the court for his actions, but added ‘it was a long time ago and I’m not that person anymore’.

Magistrate Maxanne Anderson sentenced Smith to three months’ imprisonment for each theft offense and one month’s imprisonment for each property damage offence. She ordered them all to run at the same time.

Ideanomics buys electric motorcycle brand Racy Energica

Our friends at Ideanomics caused a stir on Wall Street today when they announced that their acquisition of Italian sportbike brand Energica is complete. Leaders from Ideanomics and Energica held their first joint investor presentation today, to outline the companies’ shared vision for the future and how the two companies complement this sustainability mission.

The announcement was celebrated with a press event titled “Evolving the Road Ahead”, and began with a tour of the Energica motorcycles by the executive chairman of Ideanomics. Shane McMahonPresident of Mobility Robin Mackie, and the American CEO of Energica, Stefano Benatti, to symbolize the coming together of Italian and American companies in a place as emblematic as Times Square. CleanTechnica founder Scott Cooney was also in attendance and got to experience the company’s absolutely awesome Energica Ego firsthand.

It’s good to be the king

During the presentation to investors, the CEO of Ideanomics Alf Poor explained how the acquisition of Energica brings technology, economies of scale and strong leadership to the Ideanomics family, which includes fellow CleanTechnica friend Mani Iyer of electric tractor company Solectrac. Everyone, it seems, is pretty excited about the possibilities presented.

“Through this acquisition, Ideanomics is in a unique position to benefit from the growing demand for two-wheeled electric vehicles,” said Shane McMahon, executive chairman of Ideanomics. “Energica’s high-performance electric motorcycles, growing dealer network, and powertrain applications will allow us to leverage vehicle applications at other companies and Ideanomics customers, while supporting the next phase of growth in ‘Energica.’

This next phase of growth appears tied to Energica Inside – a growing division within the company that would seek to supply Energica’s race-proven propulsion and energy storage systems to other manufacturers across the board. sectors. These can be boutique bike builders, off-road powersports brands, or even personal watercraft. As the e-mobility revolution progresses, there seems to be no limit to their destination.

“At Energica, we are excited to support Ideanomics’ suite of electrification solutions to create a global power player in the electric vehicle space across multiple verticals,” said Livia Cevolini, CEO of Energica. . “Our bikes have more horsepower, torque and range than our competitors, and with our competitive price, we are uniquely positioned to capture a large percentage of zero-emission motorcycle enthusiasts. With our growing sales, our exceptional products and our new Energica Inside business unit, we will work hand-in-hand with other Ideanomics operating companies to develop new technologies for powertrain components and modular powertrain systems.

Scott is busy riding the new Energica Ego and Eva bikes in Manhattan today and will share his riding impressions on the bike when he returns. One thing though that I already know: I’m super jealous!

2022 Triumph Street Triple RS India Review, Specs, Price

The 2022 Triumph Street Triple RS is low on emissions, gets a bit more grunt and a mind-blowing price tag, but is still a no-compromise middleweight streetfighter you should go for.

Story: Sarmad Kadiri
Photographer: Sanjay Raikar

It’s been five years, but I still vividly remember shooting the new Street Triple RS at the Catalunya MotoGP track during the new model’s official media tour. What started as a skeptical ride of a fairingless motorcycle on a race track quickly became one of my fondest cycling memories. Fast forward to 2022 and here I am driving one on our roads, giving me a whole new perspective of the RS.

Since Triumph introduced the new generation, the naked middleweight has become an instant hit, making it a segment leader and a best-selling British marque. Overall, there are three variants to choose from, but our market gets the mid-range ‘R’ trim and the high-end ‘RS’ we have here.

If you like middleweight street fighters but don’t like to compromise, buying the “RS” is a no-brainer. This is the most powerful and desirable Street Triple on the market and Triumph’s Moto2 engine team have ensured that the 765cc straight triple is made to BS6 standard. Now two catalytic converters are required in the exhaust system to further limit emissions. So you can continue to enjoy the much-loved sporty but maneuverable Triple character, but without the guilt.

Triumph Street Triple RS: Design
It is an updated bike, so there are no major changes in terms of design or engine power. But you’ll notice the sharper twin headlights and signature daytime running lights that give the bike its distinct identity. Without looking twice, you’ll know it’s a Street Triple. There are a few other notable changes such as a more pronounced air intake just above the headlights and, like the face, the body also looks more chiseled now – straight from a mosquito net, a reworked side panel, rear section and belly. Even the aluminum frame is finished in Titanium Silver on our Matt Jet Black test bike, though the Silver Ice shade gets a fancier red treatment. You also get new graphics on the TFT with color choices, Bluetooth connectivity and GoPro controls. A new carbon fiber tip on the exhaust completes the visual changes to the BS6 bike.

Triumph Street Triple RS: Engine
Fortunately, as before, on the RS, the 765cc Triple continues to produce an impressive 123bhp, five bhp more than the standard R, making this version an absolute pleasure to drive. Engineers took this opportunity to tweak the engine to deliver a stronger mid-range, making the bike even better for everyday use. Torque has increased by two Nm to 79 Nm, which also peaks sooner than the old bike. Triumph says they have also made the crank, clutch and balancer shafts lighter, which has reduced rotational inertia by around 7%. These changes made the throttle response even more rewarding throughout the rev range now. As we rode around town, the extra grunt and torque became very evident, making the Street Triple RS much friendlier. In addition, you have the option to cycle through the driving modes according to the traffic situation. If you think Road mode is aggressive on congested roads, switching to Rain will make things smoother and less intimidating.

Triumph Street Triple RS: performance
As we pulled away from town and into the twisty hill roads, I could comfortably run around the corners without having to downshift, because there’s always plenty of power under your control. Empty stretches of road and Sport mode are a perfect combination to lift your spirits, as the roar of the three-cylinder echoes through the valley. Motorcycling is truly therapy and bikes like the Street Triple a well-recommended therapist. The sleek six-speed gearbox continues to power the rear wheel, but now features a quick-shifter, so you can up or down a gear without worrying about engaging the gear. ‘clutch. And even when you need to use the clutch, the assist system makes it easy to use. The experience is absolutely effortless.

Triumph Street Triple RS: ride and handling
Speaking of premium parts, the Street Triple RS features premium brakes and suspension that do full justice to the bike’s well-balanced chassis. Up front there’s the reliable, fully adjustable 41mm Showa fork, while at the rear the Öhlins STX40 monoshock provides damping. The bike feels nice, firm and incredibly precise when you throw it through fast corners and the meatier mid-range makes riding through a series of corners extremely rewarding. The incredible grip of the Pirelli tires encourages you to lean more. On long rides on our roads this setup tended to be a bit stiff and whoever thought the saddle would need a little more cushioning. A small compromise for a formidable maneuverability.

Triumph Street Triple RS: braking performance
The braking department is no less impressive either, with twin Brembo M50 monoblock calipers as well as Brembo MCS 19.21 radial master cylinder. The brake lever is also adjustable for reach and bite ratio and a single tap is all you need to lose speed. Strong braking prowess lets you apply the brake just a little later as you approach a corner and effortlessly swing the RS from corner to corner. And that’s when you’ll be congratulating yourself for gassing up and buying the premium RS over the standard R while passing your riding buddies without breaking a sweat.

Triumph Street Triple RS: Price
This brings us to the elephant in the room. The staggering price of Rs 11.35 lakh (ex-showroom) of the Street Triple RS, which is around Rs 2.5 lakh more expensive than the ‘R’. Yes, it’s a lot of money, but you can’t deny that the RS is a lot of motorcycling. To be honest, the standard Street Triple is all you need in town and on weekends, but if exclusivity and the finer things in life are your poison, then go ahead and sign that check.

A street-legal 1977 Honda CB500 race bike

This Honda CB500 race bike was built in the 1970s by engineer Brian Brownrigg for Bolton based rider Chris Hawkes, the bike won three separate championships at the time, it was later slightly modified and registered for a road use.

The 1970s was a time when the European old guard of the motorcycle world was being beaten down by Japanese newcomers, upending decades of history and bringing the industry to rapid decline. Motorcycles like the Honda CB500 shown here have been key to that success.

Quick Facts – A Road-Legal Honda CB500 Champion

  • The Honda CB500 was released in 1971 as the middleweight sister to the larger Honda CB750. Both models featured inline four-cylinder engines with a single overhead camshaft, two valves per cylinder and an electric starter.
  • When released in Europe, the CB500 was praised by the press, its advanced engine producing power comparable to that of a 650cc twin, but it shared none of the leaks or reliability weaknesses of its British competitors.
  • For many motorcyclists, the Honda CB750 was simply too big or too powerful, and so the lighter and cheaper CB500 was the ideal solution.
  • The Honda CB500 race bike you see here was ridden competitively in the UK during the period, winning three separate championships at Three Sisters and it ran the Ace of Aintree Championship for a time.

The Honda CB750: An Industry-Transforming Superbike

The Honda CB750 was released in 1969 in response to US dealer demand for a larger capacity motorcycle to better challenge the dominant motorcycles from companies like Harley-Davidson, Triumph, Norton and BSA.

Like almost all 1970s racing bikes of this type, this CB500 has a full fairing with windscreen allowing optimum top speed in a straight line.

What no one knew at the time was that this new model would unleash a motorcycle tsunami that would topple many of the world’s top brands, fundamentally changing the motorcycle landscape forever.

Thanks to the incredible success of the CB750, Honda developed a new model based on the same architecture, but aiming to achieve in the middle-duty market what the CB750 had achieved in the heavy-duty market.

The Honda CB500: middleweight perfection

This new motorcycle would be the Honda CB500. It featured a new engine that looked very similar to its bigger brother, but used new block, barrel and head castings, with all new internals.

Like its larger predecessor, the CB500 was an inline-four with a single overhead cam operating eight valves, two per cylinder. It was equipped with four carburettors and the engine was built in one piece, with an electric starter and a front disc brake.

honda-cb500-race-bike-9-740x493-1

This engine now has a displacement of 550 cc, it is also fitted with a Yoshimura YH-2-1 camshaft, Honda CG pistons, a bank of four Mk2 Amal 20 mm carburettors and a kit of Kibblewhite valve springs.

Power output was a respectable 50 bhp and top speed was 185 km/h, both excellent figures for a motorcycle of this displacement at the time.

The CB500 produced as much power as many larger 650cc engined motorcycles, but without any leaks and without the hassle of using a starter to get it started every day. The model quickly became a best-seller and it wasn’t long before it started being modified for use on the race tracks.

Perhaps the most successful racing version of the CB500 was the one raced by Bill Smith at the Isle of Man TT in 1973, he won the 500cc TT Production race, finishing 8.2 seconds ahead of runner-up Stan Woods.

The 1977 Honda CB500 race bike shown here

The bike you see here is a highly modified Honda CB500, it was built by successful engineer and rider Brian Brownrigg for Bolton-based rider Chris Hawkes.

honda-cb500-race-bike-winner-740x493-1

This bike has a well-stocked trophy cabinet, it won three separate championships at Three Sisters and led the Ace of Aintree championship among many other strong finishes.

Hawkes had some success at Aintree in the Ace of Aintree 500cc four-stroke championship and also raced at Cadwell Park. In 1982 the bike passed to new hands, in the years that followed it won three separate championships at Three Sisters and led the Ace of Aintree Championship.

During the winter of 1982 the bike received extensive mechanical maintenance including a ported cylinder head, white metal shell bearings and the crank stripped so that the connecting rods were polished and balanced.

It is now fitted with 20mm Mk2 Amal carburettors, a high performance Yoshimura YH-2-1 camshaft, Honda CG pistons, Kibblewhite valve spring kit and a 56mm rebore. giving a displacement of 550 cm3.

A few years later, in 1997, the bike was registered for the road for the first time, it retains its UK road registration, potentially making it an ideal weekend bike for B-road adventures.

Bajaj Pulsar is one of the most popular and best selling bikes in India. The local bike manufacturer, with the launch of the Pulsar, reshaped Indian mindsets and made them pay attention to the appearance of the vehicle, instead of just the performance aspect of the motorcycles. Bajaj has had great success with Pulsar variants. Starting with Pulsar 135, the manufacturer’s 220cc creation has gained equal traction among bike enthusiasts.
