The accession of King Charles III was proclaimed this morning in Front Street by Rena Lalgie, the governor, during a ceremony attended by lawmakers and a hushed crowd of spectators.

A 21-gun salute thundered over Hamilton Harbor to mark the close of the proclamation shortly after 9am, which follows the King’s official proclamation at a ceremony yesterday at St James’s Palace in London.

Flanked by police motorbikes, the Governor’s car pulled up in front of the podium of MPs and other guests at the flagpole on Front Street after the Royal Bermuda Regiment formed up.

Ms Lalgie opened the proclamation with a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Thursday.

As Commander-in-Chief of Bermuda, Ms Lalgie ‘hereby with one voice and consent of tongue and heart’ proclaimed Prince Charles Philip Arthur George King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

He was also proclaimed “Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith”.

A crowd of around 200 spectators gathered early this morning to watch a ceremony that hadn’t been seen in decades – with many people unsure how the event would unfold.

He said he hoped King Charles III would “exemplify what his mother stood for”.

Sir John added: ‘I congratulate the Governor, who read the proclamation in a very dignified and frank manner.

“It bodes well for Bermuda. As a colony, we will adhere to the principles of good governance. We count on the King to visit us and walk in Bermuda in the footsteps of his mother. We stand ready to greet him as soon as he is ready.

Sharon Riviere, 77, watched the ceremony from the corner of Burnaby Street where the regimental band played God save the king.

Ms Rivière also recalled the 1953 royal visit.

“I was eight years old and my mum, sister and I were standing outside Parliament in front of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

“Since then, I have followed the royal family. Now, at 77, she will not be my queen, but the monarchy will be part of my heart.”

Ride-sharing giant, Uber, has announced the launch of several new products and features in Nigeria as well as other sub-Saharan African countries like South Africa, Ghana, Kenya and Cote d’Ivoire.

The launch, which took place simultaneously in various locations across Sub-Saharan African markets, also showcased the latest addition to its suite of security features.

Speaking at the event, Uber SSA Managing Director Mr Kagiso Khaole said the brand was excited to expand to eight more cities in September in Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana.

“As we prepare to mark our 10th anniversary next year, we are excited to move to more cities enabling people to go anywhere and get everything. Our commitment to raising the bar on safety remains relentless and we continue to work hard to grow the over 3 million revenue opportunities we have created so far,” he said.

In Nigeria, Uber will now operate in Owerri and Akure in Nigeria and expand operations to Eldoret, Kisumu, Nakuru and Naivasha in Kenya; and Tamale and Sunyani in Ghana.

Uber says it’s part of its commitment to the region and signals more opportunities for more drivers to earn, while passengers have convenient and reliable travel options at the push of a button.

To help reduce costs for passengers and increase demand for drivers, Uber launched UberX Share in Ghana and Nigeria, and Uber ChapChap Share in Kenya.

L&T Technology Services wins 5-year contract with BMW Group

L&T Technology Services (LTTS) announced on Monday that it has been awarded a 5-year, multimillion-dollar contract with BMW Group to provide high-end engineering services for the company’s suite of infotainment consoles for its family of hybrid vehicles.

The BMW Group is the world’s leading manufacturer of premium automobiles and motorcycles and provider of premium financial and mobility services.

The IT solutions provider said the big contract was awarded to LTTS because of its deep domain expertise and engineering leadership in transport technologies and its proven ability to provide unique opportunities to develop projects. existing ones and work on new ones. The LTTS engineering team will provide services in the areas of software build and integration, infotainment validation and defect management, he added.

LTTS has a center near the coast that provides engineering and R&D services for BMW Group’s suite of infotainment consoles and its family of hybrid electric vehicles. Did you know… Lucerna Palace’s first business was a Japanese tea house

Now an entertainment and shopping complex, the first business located in Lucerna Palace was a Japanese tea house. Because of the ‘geisha’ hostesses, the people of Prague believed the place to be a brothel.

During its 125 years of existence, the Lucerna Palace has housed many restaurants and cafes, but one of the first was the Yokohama Japanese Teahouse, established by the Hlouch brothers.

The brothers traveled extensively in Japan and were great admirers of the country. They first presented their teahouse at the 1908 Jubilee Exhibition of the Chamber of Commerce and Commerce at the Prague Exhibition Grounds. Their idea was so popular that they decided to move the tea room to the Lucerna building.

Today, Lucerna Palace is an integral part of the Czech capital. It would probably be hard to find anyone across the country who hasn’t heard of Lucerna. It was built 125 years ago by the grandfather of the first president of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel.

Originally, he planned to build an ice hockey and winter sports stadium, but the land was too small for such a huge project, so he decided to build Lucerna. Construction took place over 14 years between 1907 and 1921, covering the entirety of the First World War.

The concept of the Japanese teahouse caught the attention of promoter Václav Havel, and he offered the Hlouch brothers the space to start their business.

Instead of vices?

In 1909, Czech World magazine featured the teahouse, encouraging Prague residents to descend into the “Lucerne underground”.

“Like a colorful lantern, the colors of the Orient shine,” the magazine continues, “girls in fiery dresses pass by. Would you like a cup of tea tonight? Escape for a moment from the peaceful flow of Czech life?

The “geishas” in the teahouse were Czech girls dressed in Japanese kimonos. The presence of geisha was suspicious to some Prague residents, who imagined the teahouse as some sort of brothel.

The newspapers of the time set the record straight. In 1910, the magazine Mládenec published the following: “An explanation is needed for the article on the Geisha in the last issue. By the word “geisha”, the writer meant a girl destined to serve guests. As is known, in Japan they have their own teahouses instead of our restaurants, and one of them was opened in Prague. The Yokohama Teahouse is a purely Czech establishment and we don’t know anything pejorative about it.

The business proved popular among Prague residents and enjoyed a great boom for several years. However, at the end of the 1920s, the owners encountered financial difficulties and had to close the tea house.

The Yokohama Teahouse has been replaced by the Zimní zahrada restaurant.
