EU set to ban sale to Russia of luxury goods worth more than 300 euros

The European Union is about to approve the ban on the sale to Russia of luxury goods worth more than 300 euros, as well as the purchase of many Russian steel and iron products within the framework of a fourth round of sanctions against invading Ukraine, according to a draft obtained by Bloomberg.

European diplomats on Monday announced the tougher measures, which also include a ban on new investment in Russian energy projects, after several days of debate behind closed doors. They could be formally adopted as early as Tuesday morning.

The bloc bans the sale of luxury cars, boats and planes worth more than €50,000, which would apply to models from several European car brands, including Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari and Porsche. It also covers motorcycles worth more than €5,000, as well as parts and accessories. Many European automakers have already voluntarily suspended sales to Russia.

The new sanctions package includes certain exemptions, notably related to energy. For example, it will not prohibit transactions necessary to purchase or transport Russian fossil fuels. It also exempts titanium, aluminum, copper, nickel, palladium and iron ore from the restrictions.

While most finished Russian steel products are included in the sanctions, precursors such as slabs and billets are not. Many EU factories depend on Russian exports for these materials and would struggle to replace them if the country’s supplies were limited.

Still, the measures will serve to further tighten the EU steel market, which is already suffering from the loss of Ukrainian shipments. Russia supplies about a fifth of the bloc’s steel imports.

With regard to luxury goods, the ban applies to the sale of certain products with a value of more than €300 per item to anyone in Russia or for use in Russia. The list of restricted items includes caviar, truffles, beer, champagne, cigars, perfumes, handbags, leather and fur clothing, overcoats, suits, shoes, shirts and others matching clothes, pearls, diamonds, gold and precious stones.

The level at which to set the threshold has been the subject of much debate among member states, with lobby groups pushing several governments to agree on high values, separate documents seen by Bloomberg show. The catch-all threshold of €300 means certain categories will mostly be spared the ban.

As with previous trade sanctions imposed on Russia, existing contracts are shielded from some of the measures included in this package, with implementation dates being delayed by several months.

Some movements have more symbolic weight than economic bite. For example, Russia accounts for around 2% of global sales of major European luxury vehicle brands, and robust global demand could offset lower exports to Russia, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.

Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and Audi’s parent company, Volkswagen AG, have already announced that they will stop exporting to Russia earlier this month.

Oil Price Tsunami: Drowning the Poor in Harder Times

MANILA, Philippines––The relentless rise in oil prices is having a “negative” ripple effect, especially on commodities and services––which is why the poor have always been hardest hit.

The Anakpawis party list, which represents peasants, workers, fishermen and the poor, said the “endless treks” have sunk poor Filipinos who are still recovering from the economic shutdown caused by COVID-19 lockdowns. 19.

While the government has said the effect of rising oil costs on the prices of commodities and services will only be felt after three months, in hindsight a spike has always hit the poorest.

RELATED STORY: Cusi: Gasoline prices can reach 100 pesos per liter according to the world market

Last year, representatives from the progressive Makabayan bloc tabled House Resolution No. 2310 calling on the government to address the severe effects of rising oil prices on commodities and services.

This is when the costs of diesel, gasoline and kerosene increased by 1.5 pesos per liter, 1.8 pesos per liter and 1.3 pesos per litre. This week, when a barrel of oil now costs $139, the rise could be as high as these:

• Diesel fuel: 11.75 P to 11.95 Pla per liter• Petrol: 6.90 to 7.20 peso per liter

• Kerosene: P9.70 to PZ9.80 per liter

READ: Double-digit fuel price hike expected this week

In this article, INQUIRER.net will explain how rising oil prices will hit hard – rising inflation, changing suggested retail prices (SRPs), higher tariffs.

Rise in inflation

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said inflation last month was 3%. This was due to a drop in “food inflation” – from 1.6% to 1.1%.

Benjamin Diokno, Governor of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), told the ANC on March 1 that the rise in oil prices is likely to push inflation beyond BSP’s target in the second quarter. CLSA Philippines said inflation could reach 5.5% to 6% in the coming months.

Diokno said rising oil prices, particularly from the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, would affect local costs and could cause inflation to rise above the 2-4% forecast by BSP this year.

On March 8, Albay representative Joey Salceda told One News that if oil prices continue to rise, the cost of living in the Philippines could soon become more expensive.

The daily minimum wage in Metro Manila, as set by the National Wage and Productivity Commission, is P537, while the daily minimum wage outside the metropolis averages P290-420.

Although this is already not enough, especially compared to the “family living wage” of 1,072 pesos in Metro Manila, Salceda said the real value of the daily minimum wage could be as low as 234 pesos at 464 pesos when adjusted for inflation.

He said earlier that President Rodrigo Duterte should call a special session of Congress by Tuesday (March 15) if the cost of oil is still above $100 a barrel, saying rising oil prices will certainly hit Filipinos.

Higher SRPs?

For Commerce Secretary Ramon Lopez, while there should be no changes in commodity prices for now, the possibility of adjusting PRSs should not be ruled out.

He told Dobol B TV on February 23 that high oil costs will hit industries that are heavily dependent on oil in their operations, saying it will also affect farmers and fishermen.

The PSA said last year that oil resources had the largest share of 0.19% in the “non-renewable energy resource rent as a percentage of gross domestic product” from 2000 to 2019.

Lopez explained that oil’s contribution to the “cost of manufacturing” is five to seven percent. With high oil prices, an increase of 3 to 3.5% in the cost of production is expected.

As the rise in oil prices, now in its 11th consecutive week, has pushed up the cost of production, Lopez said it could be passed on to Filipino consumers.

He stressed, however, that the Ministry of Trade and Industry will consider both rising oil costs and production costs, such as raw materials and logistics, when deciding whether there will be a change in the PRSs.

To get a sense of the cost of commodities now that the effect of higher oil prices is yet to be fully felt, here is a list from the Department of Agriculture of prevailing retail prices in the metropolitan area of Manila:

• Rice

1. Special imported commercial rice: P50/kg2. Premium imported commercial rice: 46.50 PPP/kilogram3. Well milled imported commercial rice: 42 P/kilogram4. Special local commercial rice: 50 P/kg5. Premium local commercial rice: P45/kilogram

This, as Anakpawis stated, there was an 11-14% increase in the cost of food from 2019 to January 2022. The increase was highest in Central Visayas at 14%, and in the region of Calabarzon and Bicol with 13%.

Tariff increase

As jeepney drivers were also affected by rising oil prices, they petitioned the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to raise the minimum fare from P9 to P15. The LTFRB has yet to hear the petition.

RELATED STORY: Government ready to raise tariffs as fuel prices rise

“The ever-increasing rate of inflation, which drives up the prices of basic commodities, has pushed the PUJ actors to the limit and can no longer provide 3 times a day of meals to their respective families.”

La Liga ng mga Transportasyon at Operators sa Pilipinas said this forced them to ask for a “conservative fare increase” of P15 as the minimum fare for the first 4 kilometres.

For now, however, the LTFRB said the minimum tariff would remain the same. He also warned that drivers charging passengers more P9s could face fines of thousands of pesos.

With oil prices rising, 1-UTAK chairman Vigor Mendoza’s attorney told dzBB that some jeepney drivers are now planning to stop the roads by Tuesday or Wednesday.

“There will really be drivers who still stop working. It’s not that they’re protesting or anything, but they’re really not making any more money,” he said in Filipino.

Government subsidy

The Ministry of Budget and Management has already released 3 billion pesos for fuel subsidy programs –– 2.5 billion pesos to the Ministry of Transport and 500,000 pesos to the Ministry of Agriculture (DA).

The LTFRB said more than 377,000 drivers of public utility vehicles – jeepneys, minibuses, UV express, taxis, tricycles, TNVS, motorcycle taxis and even delivery services – are expected to receive 6,500 pesos in subsidy each.

The DA also said farmers and fishermen will each get P3,000: “[The amount of] 500 million pesos are now ready to be donated in March. The guidelines, the DA said, are now in “final stages of preparation.”

However, Anakpawis pointed out that since last year, there were an additional 16,620 pesos in the drivers’ two-month expenses for diesel; 7,500 pesos of farmers’ expenses for land preparation and irrigation; and 9,000 pesos for fishermen’s expenses.

As he launches a week-long protest, Anakpawis said he would fight for the suspension of VAT and oil excise duties.

France will introduce a rebate of 0.15 euros (0.22 Australian dollars) per liter of transport fuel to help drivers cope with soaring prices at the pump, Prime Minister Jean Castex said in an interview with the daily newspaper Le Parisien. According to him, the measure, which will apply for four months from April 1, should cost the government around two billion euros. Retail gasoline and diesel prices hit record highs in many countries around the world this week as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine heightened market tensions, after savings began to recover from the coronavirus pandemic. A gesture of support for French motorists had been signaled by President Emmanuel Macron, who is campaigning for a second term in elections next month. In the interview published on Saturday, Castex said the rebate would cover households as well as trucking and farmers. The measure, which he said fuel distributors should reinforce through their own efforts to reduce retail prices, would save a motorist €9 on a 60-litre tank, Castex added. Macron said his government had already spent 20 billion euros a year to moderate gasoline and electricity costs. Australian Associated Press

Sale of t-shirts to help Ukrainians who helped an officer during a police mission

BRANTFORD A Brantford man says he sells t-shirts to help Ukrainians who have helped him.

Steve Long, an officer with the Aylmer Police Department, spent a year in Ukraine as part of a Canadian police mission in 2018.

He traveled through much of the country which has now been invaded by Russia.

“I lived in an apartment in Kyiv right next to the Golden Gate, a neighborhood I now watch on the news,” he said.

The T-shirts feature a graphic representation of Ukraine in the country’s blue and yellow colors, with a red maple leaf in the center.

“It represents the connection that Canada has with Ukraine,” Long said. “The second largest population of Ukrainians in the world is right here in Canada.

Long said the police mission he was involved in was an international peacekeeping operation through the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which also had missions in Iraq, Haiti and Palestine. The RCMP would receive requests through the United Nations.

Candidates for the mission go through a selection process that includes reading, writing and physical tests and training in international law, human rights and first aid.

“We took Ukraine-specific training on culture, visited an Orthodox church and learned about the country’s history…” Long said.

He helped develop a police motorcycle program in Ukraine. At the time of his deployment, he was working for the Halton Regional Police.

“We first trained 21 new motorcycle instructors because they had never had one before,” he noted. “That was my expertise, and mainly the reason why I was selected to go to Ukraine.”

Long said the overall objective of the mission was to bring reform and stabilization, as the police were seen as corrupt under previous political regimes.

“We trained 200 to 300 police during my time there, and the reality is that some of them were killed in this war,” he said. “I do daily checks with some of them.”

Throughout his time in Ukraine, Long and his 21 colleagues have relied heavily on performers, including two named Taras and Vadym, who will benefit from funds raised from the sale of the T-shirts.

“There is a lot of money globally that is committed to Ukraine,” he noted. “A group of us members of the mission have formed a group and want to help those who have helped us.”

Long said Taras and Vadym took their wives and children to the Polish border, but the two men will remain in Ukraine.

“They will have sent their wives and children across the border with very little money and nothing to support themselves.”

He said he follows a woman on Instagram, who is the daughter of an officer coordinating the Civil Defense Forces just north of Kyiv.

“The apartment below her was blown up and she was putting out the fire,” Long said. “I’m watching as best I can. But it’s really difficult because I’m afraid that one day (Instagram posts) will stop.

Long planned to sell T-shirts only to colleagues. But a social media post resulted in a single order of 100 shirts, and in less than two weeks, 300 shirts were sold.

To purchase a shirt, contact Long at: [email protected]

A slogan written in Russian under the shirt graphic may be offensive to some. This is the response of one of the Ukrainian soldiers defending a Black Sea island, who told an officer aboard a Russian warship to ‘fuck you’ when asked to surrender .

“A group of us mission members have formed a group and want to help those who have helped us.”

But it’s really difficult because I’m afraid that one day (the Instagram posts) will stop.

RM Sotheby’s announces sale of cars from Nigel Mansell’s private collection

With the first round of the 2022 Grand Prix season due to start in a week, could there be a better time to reveal a collection of cars sold by a former F1 world champion who has often been ranked among the top drivers? all time ?

f1pics_hungarian-gp_89_031

Probably not, which is why RM Sotheby’s asked Classic Driver to report that British motorsport hero Nigel Mansell is unloading five cars from his personal collection – including the 1991 Williams FW14 which became world famous for having allowed for one of the most enduring manifestations of sportsmanship in the history of motor racing. The cars are being sold by Florida-based Mansell from his private museum in Jersey and will be the stars of the May 14 RM Sotheby’s sale in Monaco, which will take place in the principality over the historic grand prix weekend.

The auction house says Mansell feels it’s time the prized cars, including four he’s owned for more than 30 years, were given a new lease of life – and has even offered to meet the respective buyers to advise them on their future use. . Combined presale estimates for the five cars range from a low of €4.1m to a high of €8.2m – the wide range explained by their unique combination of historical significance and provenance of “motorsport royalty”. And, on the basis that the FW14B ‘Red Five’ in which Mansell won five GPs during his title-winning 1992 season fetched £2,700,000 three years ago (although not owned by the pilot) , the upper prediction is not infeasible. In order of importance, here are the five Mansell-owned cars up for grabs.

Chassis number 5, “Red 5” and five wins – it’s all in the numbers for FW14-5. Considered one of the most technically advanced F1 cars of its time, Adrian Newey’s brilliant opening design for Williams featured advanced aerodynamics, innovative active suspension and the first ever semi-automatic sequential gearbox. by the team. Although it carried over the 3.5-litre V10 engine from the previous year’s FW13B, the combination of Newey’s genius and Mansell’s rugged driving style proved hard to beat, with the result that “It Leone” (as the Italians called him) achieved a remarkable five wins in this particular car during the ’91 season.

He first took the checkered flag at Magny Cours on July 7, followed a week later by a home win at the British Grand Prix where he crossed the finish line 42.293 seconds ahead. on Gerhard Berger, second. The FW14-5 winning streak continued in Germany, Italy and Spain – where, on a wet and slippery circuit in Catalonia, Mansell and Senna staged an epic wheel-to-wheel battle in which the sparks literally flew . But it was back to the British Grand Prix where the eternal FW14-5 image was formed – when Mansell stopped on his winning lap to give a ‘taxi ride’ to the beleaguered Senna , whose McLaren ran out of fuel on the 58th lap. The setback didn’t stop Senna from winning his third world championship that year, but in recognition of Mansell’s impressive second-place finish, Williams gifted him FW14-5 – although without its engine which had to be returned to Renault. The car is estimated between 1.5 and 3 million euros.

1989 Ferrari 640, chassis 109

Described by RM Sotheby’s as “exactly as it was when driven by Mansell at the Australian GP in Adelaide in 1989”, this Ferrari 640 took Mansell to victory at the Brazilian and Hungarian rounds, helping him finish the season in fourth place. and win the Scuderia third in the constructors’ championship. After joining Ferrari in 1988 to replace Michele Alboreto after his first three-year stint at Williams, Mansell turned out to be the very last member of the team to be personally recruited by Enzo Ferrari himself – an occasion that Il Commendatore marked by presenting the British driver with an F40 as a “welcome gift”.

The Tifosi’s embraced Mansell wholeheartedly and nicknamed him “Il Leone” because of his brave approach to driving the V-12-powered 640, which was the first Ferrari F1 to feature the revolutionary car. soon to be- ubiquitous paddle shifters, semi-automatic gearbox. Mansell quickly got to grips with the new 640, setting a new record at the Fiorano circuit during a test session in January before chassis 109 became the first Ferrari team car to be unveiled at the press without the presence of Enzo Ferrari – he had died six months ago. earlier.

Chassis 109 proved to be a key part of what was a tumultuous F1 season for Mansell, with the manufacturer presenting it to him straight after the final race in Adelaide, from where it was shipped to his personal collection (then located in England). The car is not believed to have been driven for 32 years, but is 100% complete and ready to be kept in its ‘last run’ condition – or returned to track service. The Ferrari is estimated at 2.5 to 5 million euros.

2005 GP Masters Reynard 2KI

entitystudio-81

Mansell’s glittering F1 career may have officially come to an end at the 1995 Spanish Grand Prix after 15 seasons, but his enthusiasm for racing never wavered, as evidenced by his stint in the CART Indy World Series in 1993 which he duly won on his debut. year, making him the only person to hold both the World Drivers’ Championship title and the US Open Wheel National Championship title. After a decade in the spotlight, he returned to the track in 2005 as a backer and driver in the new Grand Prix Masters series for former F1 drivers – in which he twice drove this Reynard 2KI to victory, first in Kyalami (the only race of the season) and again in Qatar in the opening of the 2006 season.

The car is based on a 2000 Reynard Champ Car and is powered by a 3.5-litre derivative of the Cosworth XB V8 engine, which is claimed to give a potential top speed of 200mph – all without “driving aids” such as ABS, power steering or traction control, the aim being to highlight the raw know-how of the “masters”. Offered in its original livery from the 2006 season, the car is said to be complete but will require a complete (and inexpensive) re-commissioning before being used again in anger. The car is estimated between 100,000 and 150,000 euros.

1991 Birkin 7 Sprint

entitystudio-79
Mansell may have reached the pinnacle of his profession in the most advanced racing machines of his day – but even the best drivers in the world enjoy the back-to-basics thrill of being behind the wheel of a car based on the legendary Colin Chapman’s Lotus Seven design. This partly explains why Mansell acquired this South African-built Birkin 7 Sprint directly from the manufacturer, which was created in 1982 by John Watson, a direct descendant of the legendary Bentley Boy Sir Henry “Tim” Birkin.

Watson had long been a fan of the Lotus 7, so he decided to build his own version to sell to like-minded enthusiasts – and launched it at the 1983 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami in the presence of Chapman’s widow, Hazel, and the Lotus F1 team. driver at the time – Elio de Angelis and, of course, Mansell. He is said to have driven the Birkin quite often in the UK but, as with other cars in the collection, it has now been dormant for many years. It is estimated between 10,000 and 15,000 euros.

1992 iC Modulo

entitystudio-77

Never heard of it? No, neither do we, but the three-wheeled Modulo is said to deliver stunning performance thanks to its combination of a three-cylinder BMW K75S motorcycle engine and a total weight of just 390 kilos. It was created by Italian designer Carlo Lamattina and put into production in 1988, featuring a Kevlar-reinforced body, independent front suspension and a 28-litre fuel tank that gave it a range of up to 560 km/335 miles.

Mansell acquired this 1990 example directly from Lamattina, who presented it to him after the qualifying round of the Italian GP in 1992. It will be sold complete with photographs of the two men taken on the circuit, another of Mansell at the steering wheel of the Modulo and a letter from the designer confirming its authenticity and that it previously belonged to him, being the first example produced. Suitable for road or track use, it has only covered 3,000 km from new and should sell for between 5,000 and 25,000 euros.
