A cartoon Facebook post shows a father riding his son’s bicycle. The child sobs because he does not want to part with his two-wheeler. His mother consoles him by saying, “Don’t cry. Your dad will give you back your bike once the price of gas drops!

This little comic strip, a humorous version of record fuel price hikes, is becoming a reality as many people across the country are turning to bikes in hopes of easing the strain on their wallets.

Some have even chosen to exchange their motorcycles for bicycles!

Fuel oil prices in Bangladesh have risen 75% in two phases since November last year. As a result, transportation costs have risen dramatically, affecting people from all walks of life.

Amid these turbulent times, two-wheelers have come as a saving grace.

Cheaper, cleaner

Emran Hossain Tipu, a resident of Sarulia area in Demra, Dhaka, works at the Fulbaria branch of Uttara Bank.

He bought a motorbike to go to his office 11.5 kilometers from his home.

However, he was in trouble due to the sudden rise in fuel prices.

At first, he tried public transport modes, but his condition left him dismayed. The daily squabbles between passengers and bus drivers over extra fares, overcrowding and unbearable traffic jams, as well as illegal stops to pick up passengers, all led to him being late for work every day.

It was then that Emran turned to bicycles. For the past two weeks, he has been avoiding the daily hassles.

On a Facebook post in BD Cyclist, a popular Facebook group, he wrote, “It costs me 90 Tk to go to the office by bus. Then in those 10 days I would have spent 10 x 90 = 900 taka. Saved Tk 900 by using my bike Apart from saving money it also keeps the body healthy So if we try to ditch public transport and start using bikes it will make us saving money, will make us fit.

Apart from monetary and health gains, Emran says he also saves about half an hour on his travel time.

“You don’t have to get into traffic jams if you’re riding a bike. If you get stuck at a signal, you can walk through it. It took almost the same time as I was using my motorbike,” he wrote, adding there was no police harassment either.

Abir Hasan Simanto, a resident of the city’s Mirpur district, has a similar story. A software engineer by profession, Abir’s office is in Banani.

He also started commuting by bicycle to avoid public buses amid rising fuel prices.

He used to spend around Tk 100 a day on rickshaw and bus fees to get to the office, but now that cost is saved and he gets to work faster.

“Biking is good exercise too. I sleep better at night. I want more people to get interested in cycling on a regular basis. It’s the best form of transportation in this city. You won’t realize that until you start to use bicycles,” he said. wrote.

“One can start with a bicycle which costs between 10,000 and 12,000 TK. However, you should always be aware of the risk of theft as there is no bicycle parking anywhere.”

He however mentioned that Dhaka’s roads are quite risky for cycling as there are no separate cycle lanes while other vehicles often drive recklessly. He recommended always wearing a good helmet.

Simanto raised an important point regarding security.

A total of 10,504 road accidents occurred in Bangladesh between 2018 and 2020. Of these, 259 involved bicycles, according to the Accident Research Institute of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. . Between 2019 and 2022, there have been 13 fatalities in Dhaka alone involving bicycles.

Freedom to ride

Sultana Lia from Narayanganj has been cycling regularly for three years. A trainer at Novera, a voluntary organization that helps girls cycle in the region, she said: “Cycling preserves personal freedom. On public transport, anyone can be the victim of harassment. But with bicycles, this problem does not exist. Cycling also makes people feel better through physical exercise.”

Arifur Rahman Khan, a familiar face in the BD Cyclist Facebook group and business executive by profession, has been cycling for nearly 16 years and swears by it.

As a student, he bought a bicycle to save time for going to school. Although he went through different stages of his career, he never left the bikes.

According to him, there is no better solution than the bicycle to solve physical, mental, financial and environmental problems.

“You never have to get stuck in a traffic jam with a bike. Cycling also keeps your heart healthy. It’s also cost effective,” Arifur Rahman told TBS.

On cycle recommendations, he said one should choose a bike based on their body size and shape. “If you don’t use the bike according to your body structure, after a long time, you may face various problems such as back pain and abdominal pain.”

Arifur also gave some tips to keep some things in mind when commuting to the office by bike. “You should hit the road a little earlier than usual and wear a cycling jersey. You should also rest for a while in an open area to avoid excessive sweating.

“Keeping a few clothes in a locker in the office could be a good option. If not, you have to take the clothes with you. he added.

Apart from all this, there are also the economic characteristics of the bikes for the country itself.

According to Eurostat data, Bangladesh is currently the 3rd largest exporter to the European Union and the 8th largest exporter in the world. Some 80% of exports go to the 27 EU countries.

For now, crippling traffic jams, the desire for a healthier lifestyle, and even the proliferation of numerous delivery services have all led people to see bicycles as the best and most affordable solution. The record fuel price hike may just be the final boost.

A dealer wanted in the sale of heroin who killed a 30-year-old Northampton Co. man, according to DA

The authorities in Lehigh County won an arrest warrant on Friday in a 2020 drug overdose that killed a 30-year-old Northampton County man, according to a news release.

Lehigh County Jim Martin and Whitehall Township Police Chief Michael Marks said in the release that Natalia Hellriegel is facing a felony charge of delivering drugs causing death and felony counts and related offences.

Hellriegel was not immediately arraigned on the charges, according to court records. The 29-year-old is listed in the release as being from Ephrata in Lancaster County and in court records as a resident of Catasauqua.

Investigators allege that Hellriegel on September 10, 2020 sold heroin to Dominic Anthony of Lehigh Township. Anthony was found dead next to his motorbike that day in a car park along the 2600 block of MacArthur Road in Whitehall, the statement said.

“Anthony died of mixed drug toxicity and his death was ruled an accident by the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office,” authorities said in the statement.

Bolt ensures Nigerian drivers have a better travel experience

By Adedapo Adesanya

Ride-sharing giant, Uber, has announced the launch of several new products and features in Nigeria as well as other sub-Saharan African countries like South Africa, Ghana, Kenya and Cote d’Ivoire.

The launch, which took place simultaneously in various locations across Sub-Saharan African markets, also showcased the latest addition to its suite of security features.

Speaking at the event, Uber SSA Managing Director Mr Kagiso Khaole said the brand was excited to expand to eight more cities in September in Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana.

“As we prepare to mark our 10th anniversary next year, we are excited to move to more cities enabling people to go anywhere and get everything. Our commitment to raising the bar on safety remains relentless and we continue to work hard to grow the over 3 million revenue opportunities we have created so far,” he said.

In Nigeria, Uber will now operate in Owerri and Akure in Nigeria and expand operations to Eldoret, Kisumu, Nakuru and Naivasha in Kenya; and Tamale and Sunyani in Ghana.

Uber says it’s part of its commitment to the region and signals more opportunities for more drivers to earn, while passengers have convenient and reliable travel options at the push of a button.

To help reduce costs for passengers and increase demand for drivers, Uber launched UberX Share in Ghana and Nigeria, and Uber ChapChap Share in Kenya.

Uber’s shared rides offer saves riders up to 30% off the trip fare when paired with a co-rider heading in the same direction, and when a match isn’t possible, they can always save 5% of their ride.

Speaking on the subject, Mr. Khaole said: “The introduction of UberX Share allows us to proudly demonstrate the power of our platform, understanding the ability to match passengers’ destinations while providing convenience and affordable price. We are a global company that builds locally; and in Ghana, we have tapped into the local carpooling culture on our travels, making this product a perfect fit for the market.

He also launched UberXL in Nairobi, Kenya, to make it easier to travel across the city with a full crew. This option accommodates up to six people, which is ideal for airports and business trips where extra luggage space may be required. In South Africa, passengers can now book their group travel 30 days in advance with UberXL Reserve and Uber Van Reserve.

Uber Comfort, which is currently available in South Africa and Ivory Coast, will now be available in Ghana. This bespoke offering is designed for riders looking for an upgrade to their daily ride with added comfort. Uber Comfort drivers are known for providing excellent service, while demonstrating friendliness, courtesy and professionalism.

Uber Connect, one of the most popular products in the app, available in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Ghana. This will soon be available in two more cities in Nigeria.

Uber Connect is an on-demand delivery solution that allows users to send and receive packages quickly. The feature is integrated with PIN verification giving users peace of mind that their package is being delivered to the right person.

The company said this would help it take a stand for safety.

“Security is at the heart of how we do business and we are proud to announce three new security features to help improve the user experience,” Mr. Khaole said.

Other products include an audio recording driver in South Africa. With this, Uber will now allow passengers and drivers to use the app to record and share audio of their trip as evidence in the event of a security incident – something drivers have requested based on their feedback during the round tables. This new opt-in audio recording feature, which is being tested in Pretoria and Johannesburg, has been successful in parts of the United States and Latin America where Uber operates.

The in-app emergency service in Nigeria was also launched. The company has partnered with Sety to provide on-demand security and medical response to passengers and drivers while traveling. This collaboration will also provide access to a private security response unit closest to their location, using a connected device.

He also announced a security check across the SSA. This feature encourages riders to complete their safety profile by activating and using available features such as Trusted Contacts, PIN Verification and RideCheck. This is available in all SSA countries where Uber operates.

Brand new teaser reveals more details about Mahindra’s upcoming all-electric XUV400

While previous teasers only showed close-ups of the details of Mahindra’s upcoming all-electric SUV – the XUV400 – the latest teaser reveals much more. Besides some details, Mahindra has finally added some long shots of the XUV400 in its teaser campaign. These shots confirmed that, as expected, the Mahindra XUV400 will indeed be longer than the internal combustion engine XUV300, which is an SUV under 4 meters. One of the main reasons behind this is that electric vehicles have no tax advantage for being less than 4 meters long, and Mahindra will take advantage of this to add extra space in the back row and trunk of the XUV400. increasing as a whole. length.

Mahindra XUV400 will be longer than its ICE counterpart, the XUV300.

The XUV400 is set to launch on September 8, 2022, just one day before World Electric Vehicle Day. Its electric motor is expected to produce around 150bhp, while the model could have a choice of two different battery options. The range of higher variants should exceed 450 km on a single charge. The XUV400 is expected to be positioned between the Tata Nexon EV and MG ZS EV, while it’s likely to be on par with the Nexon EV Max in performance and price.

The XUV400 will receive a new grille with several “X” embossed.

Another detail revealed in the latest teaser is the grille. Since EVs don’t need a traditional grille, the XUV400 gets a new insert in place of the grille, with several ‘X’s embossed on it. Center stage is of course taken by the Twin Peaks logo, and the grille is flanked by familiarly designed headlights. Mahindra has yet to announce any feature details, but expect many of the XUV300’s features to be available here as well. We could see upgrades in the form of a digital instrument console and possibly a larger touchscreen infotainment unit.

Is Bajaj ready to revive British motorcycle brand Vincent?

Iconic British motorcycle brand Vincent could be revived with recent reports that the brand and naming rights have been acquired by India’s Bajaj Auto. Bajaj is India’s largest exporter of motorcycles, and leaked documents online seem to suggest that the Indian two-wheeler giant has indeed registered a trademark for the Vincent brand. So, is Bajaj planning to move into the modern classic motorcycle segment, becoming another Indian manufacturer to revive a historic British motorcycle marque?

Did Bajaj acquire Vincent?

carandbike has contacted Bajaj Auto, but company officials have neither confirmed nor denied such a development, leading us to believe that acquiring Vincent might be a possibility after all. An image of a trademark filing shows the registration date as 2017, with the “expiration date” listed as 2027, so there are still a few years left, if at all, Bajaj intends to relaunch and relaunch the brand. The trademark filing says it’s been five years since Bajaj acquired the name, but it’s only now that news has started to get noticed. Spy photo of the upcoming Bajaj-Triumph roadster, Bajaj is already manufacturing small-displacement motorcycles for Triumph in India. These Triumph badged bikes will be manufactured in India and exported worldwide.

Given that Bajaj already has a capital-free partnership with Triumph Motorcycles to manufacture small-displacement Triumph motorcycles in India, will the acquisition of Vincent give the two-wheeler giant some extra firepower to compete in the segment? modern classic? A brand that has almost no recall in the Indian market may not make strategic sense for Bajaj Auto. And modern Indian-made small-displacement classic motorcycles branded “Vincent” will not only have the brand appeal and value to take on segment leader Royal Enfield as well as powerful and recently revived brands like Jawa. and Yezdi.

What does Vincent mean to Bajaj?

At first glance, the news seems like a logical step for Bajaj to take on the likes of Royal Enfield, BSA, Norton, Jawa and Yezdi with its own range, but with the Vincent brand. But building brand equity for the Indian market can be a challenge. After all, Vincent is hardly known, outside of a handful of classic motorcycle enthusiasts in India at least. If Bajaj is indeed looking to acquire Vincent, what could be the possible strategy behind his revival? We are looking at a few possibilities. But first, let’s look at what the Vincent brand is.

A 1939 Vincent Series A Rapide. When launched in 1936, the Vincent Rapide was advertised as “the fastest production motorcycle” with a top speed of 110 mph (177 km/h).

The history of Vincent Motorcycles

British motorcycle brand Vincent was in production from 1928 to 1955, created by Philip Vincent who bought an existing motorcycle manufacturer HRD or Howard Raymond Davies, a small manufacturer of performance motorcycles of the time, which operated from 1924 to 1928. From 1934, Vincent developed two new engines, a 500 cc single cylinder, as well as a 1000 cc V-twin. Production increased in the late 1930s, with Vincent producing his most famous post-WWII models in the late 1940s.

The Vincent Rapide was advertised by the company as its fastest motorcycle, with a top speed of 110 mph (177 km/h), but it was quickly eclipsed by the brand’s most famous model, the Vincent Black. 1948 Shadow. The Black Shadow, in stock form, could reach 125 mph (201 km/h), and in its first year of production, a Black Shadow reached 150 mph (241 km/h) at the Bonneville Salt Flats. In 1956, a Vincent Black Shadow in New Zealand set a new FIM (international motorcycle record) at 186 mph (299 km/h)!

Royal Enfield is the leader in the modern classic segment in India, and in recent years the company has cemented its position as the world leader in the mid-size motorcycle segment with a series of well-designed new models.

The modern classic

In recent years, the modern classic motorcycle has seen a revival with Royal Enfield cementing its position as the world leader in the mid-size motorcycle segment. Mahindra Group subsidiary Classic Legends acquired British motorcycle brand BSA and launched the new BSA Gold Star in the UK in July 2022. The new Gold Star is manufactured in India, but the company has established a technology center where manufacturing for European markets, on a small scale, can be initiated.

The new BSA Gold Star is built around a 650cc single-cylinder engine sourced from Rotax. With a period look, the new BSA Gold Star will spearhead the brand across the world, even in the United States.

In 2020, TVS Motor Company, India’s second-largest two-wheeler exporter after Bajaj, acquired British motorcycle brand Norton. Since then, TVS has invested heavily in the Norton brand and established a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in the UK. For Bajaj, the focus on the modern classic motorcycle segment took a different turn, when it signed a capital-free partnership with Triumph Motorcycles to manufacture small-displacement motorcycles in India. Bajaj is looking to expand its presence across Europe, and a brand like Vincent will give it strong brand equity in markets where Bajaj will be looking to establish a strong foothold.

Bajaj eyeing Western markets?

However, this still leaves plenty of room for Bajaj Auto to gain a foothold in the renewed interest in the mid-size modern classic motorcycle segment. While Vincent may not be so well known in India, Bajaj Auto is already working on establishing the brand and network in European markets. Today, Bajaj Auto exports two-wheelers to more than 70 countries around the world, and Bajaj Auto International Holdings BV now owns a 49.9% stake in PTW Holding AG, the parent company of the KTM Group.

Although establishing Bajaj in the West, particularly in Europe, may be the next big thing on the agenda, acquiring a historic brand like Vincent and relaunching it, with new technologies, may well be Bajaj Auto’s magnum opus of modern classic strategy. And that certainly opens up a whole world of possibilities, including a foothold in new segments, new markets and a direct shot at Norton and BSA’s premium customer base. Let the games begin!

FREY’s Evolve E-MTB offers a high-end kit at an affordable price

Chinese e-bike manufacturer FREY has been in the market since 2013 and has earned a reputation for its affordable yet performance-oriented e-bikes. Covering a broad spectrum of the market, FREY’s e-bike offerings range from beginner-focused urban commuters to performance-focused eMTBs capable of some of the toughest terrain.

Its new offering sits squarely in the middle of the eMTB game, and it’s called the Evolve. Similar to most of FREY’s other offerings, the Evolve commands an attractive price, starting at $2,980, and is packed with technology you’d expect to find in bikes retailing for almost twice the price. FREY’s Evolve eMTB range currently consists of two models: the Neo and Neo Pro, and frame sizes range from Medium, Large and Extra Large. Regardless of the variant, the FREY Evolve series contains a downtube-integrated battery with a capacity of 672 Wh, a Bafang M510 mid-drive electric motor.

The Evolve’s performance specifications consist of a top speed limited to 25 miles per hour, per e-bike rules and regulations. Additionally, the Bafang M510 is rated for a peak power of 580 watts and 95 Nm, which should make even the steepest and most technical climbs feel like a walk in the park. The battery is claimed to provide a range of up to 60 miles on a single charge under optimal driving conditions. To help the rider get the most out of the powertrain, a host of premium components from some of the most reputable manufacturers in the industry.

This is where the Evolve Neo and Neo Pro differ, as the more affordable Neo packs a basic, albeit impressive, set of components like a RockShox Recon fork with 150mm of travel, Tektro HD brakes and a nine-speed SRAM drivetrain. The Evolve Neo Pro, on the other hand, which costs $3,580, raises the bar in terms of features with a RockShox Yari with 160mm of travel, Magura MT5e brakes and an 11-speed SRAM drivetrain.

Overall, FREY’s Evolve range of bikes offers remarkable value for money. Weighing the scales at 26 kilograms, these machines are by no means featherweights, but are nonetheless capable eMTBs for casual trail explorers. FREY offers them in three colors including Mako Blue, Sunrise Pink and Wafer White.

The first day of school also means a whole new space for some students in the South Huron region

Students return to class on Tuesday and for some students in the Huron South area of Kitchener, they are entering a brand new school.

Oak Creek Public School will serve nearly 600 students from the area, which has seen significant growth in recent years.

“Standing here, [the area] is still under construction, it’s still in development,” school principal Jeff Johnson told CBC Kitchener-Waterloo. The morning edition.

Johnson said the school welcomes new families who have just moved to the area, as well as other newcomer families. The school also draws students from nearby public schools, including Janet Metcalfe Public School.

“Our school community will be very diverse and we look forward to getting to know them,” he said.

The goal is for the school to also be a “walking school,” Johnson adds, where students walk, ride or cycle instead of taking public transport.

The school has been under construction since the Waterloo Region District School Board received funding for construction in 2018. It is also home to a new daycare center and the new City of Kitchener Community Center.

Johnson said the school board took a modern approach to space design with lots of natural light, wider hallways and a general openness to classrooms and common areas.

Johnson points to some of the key features of the classroom, including flow desks to make it easier to group and move students, whiteboards set to student height, and new flat-screen TVs in the classroom instead of projectors .

“There’s really no ‘front of the class,’” he said, adding that there’s also no desk for the teachers.

“There are workstations for teachers and plenty of table space, but that table space is going to be used to facilitate learning, conferences and small group work.”

Johnson said getting to know his students and their families will be central to building new relationships this year.

“I’m really excited to get started and create this sense of community here in Oak Creek,” he said.

The GYTR PRO range: closer than ever to the R1 WorldSBK

After the historic Triple Crown in 2021, four Yamaha Racing teams compete in the FIM Superbike World Championship with the Yamaha R1: Team Toprak Razgatlıoğlu won the world title with – Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK – as well as GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, GIL Motorsport Yamaha WorldSBK Team and Motoxracing Yamaha WorldSBK Team. All bikes are equipped with GYTR parts to increase the performance of the R1 and components developed by Yamaha Racing engineers specifically for machines that race at the highest level. Today, Yamaha is offering these components, in limited quantities, to all Yamaha riders at GYTR PRO SHOPS.

So customers will be able to build an R1 with all the same parts as the R1 WorldSBK, using the new Yamaha GYTR PRO range. Yamaha first gave a taste of this range of special parts with the R1 GYTR PRO VR46, offered to Valentino Rossi in 2021 using a combination of parts from the future GYTR and GYTR PRO catalogs, and some high-end components from ‘Öhlins and Brembo.

400 parts have been developed for the entire GYTR PRO range, with targeted availability through GYTR PRO SHOPS from April 2023.

Some of the key components of the GYTR PRO line are:

The complete list of the full GYTR PRO range and their prices will be announced by the end of the year.

New Delhi: Jaipur-based electric scooter maker HOP Electric Mobility on Monday launched its electric motorcycle, HOP OXO, with prices starting at INR 1.25 lakhs. Consumers can purchase the new model at dealerships or on the company’s website.

Ketan Mehta, CEO and Founder of HOP Electric Mobility, said, “Electric is taking the Indian market by storm. HOP OXO is the result of years of R&D, road testing and the hard work of hundreds of HOP employees who poured their sweat and blood into launching the most progressive e-bike on the market.

“Given that our dealer partners have already completed 5,000 pre-launch registrations, we anticipate tremendous hyper growth in this category. We are continuously working to further strengthen our product portfolio,” he said.

The model is launched in two variants – HOP OXO and HOP OXO X.

According to the company, HOP OXO comes with an advanced five-inch information display with an IP67 rating for protection against dust, dirt, and splashing water.
