Insurance companies are overwhelmed by the increase in road accidents – SIC

SIC Insurance PLC revealed that although insurance companies charge a premium to cover vehicles for legitimate liability, the increase in road deaths is placing a huge financial burden on insurance companies.

The increase in road accidents was not only a health challenge, but had a significant economic cost for the insurance industry, as insurers were paying huge sums of money in claims resulting from these accidents and the overall impact on families, “life cannot be compensated”.

Ms. Cynthia Kwarteng Tufuor, SIC Area Manager, said this during the Ghana News Agency Dialogue to discuss the impact of road accidents on the insurance sector.

The latest national road safety statistics indicate that between January and May this year, the country experienced 6,472 road accidents resulting in 6,620 injuries and 1,140 deaths.

On the categories of vehicles concerned, the data shows that 4,873 passenger cars representing 44.88%; 3,669 commercial vehicles, i.e. 33.79%; and 2,316 motorcycles, or 21.33%, were involved in road accidents.

National Road Safety data also identified Greater Accra with 2,735, Ashanti with 1,496 and the East with 709 as the top three regions with the highest number of road accidents between January and May this year. .

Ms Tufuor said the increase in road accidents is placing a huge burden on insurance companies, which are paying out huge compensation to victims or their dependents.

Ms Tufuor, who is also responsible for monitoring parts of the Volta and eastern regions, said improved road safety was beneficial to the public and the insurance industry.

She said insurance coverage ensured that the health and property costs of road accident victims were protected, adding that reducing the number or severity of accidents was generally beneficial to all while reducing the volume of claims and compensation paid by insurance companies.

She said SIC Insurance PLC was taking a leadership role in reducing the cause of road safety.

Miss Cynthia Twumasi, Deputy Area Manager, SIC Insurance PLC, denied the idea that some insurance companies were unfairly scamming their customers, saying most of these issues were based on a misunderstanding of the type of insurance cover provided .

She said it was important that potential customers clearly understood the terms and conditions of the insurance cover they purchased so that they were compensated appropriately based on the cover.

She said SIC Insurance PLC paid its claims on time, explaining that insurance companies were regulated by the National Insurance Commission, which oversees, regulates and controls insurance business in the country.

She therefore advised people whose legitimate claims have been rejected by an insurance company to seek appropriate redress through the Commission.

Regarding the need for insurance companies to join the GNA-Tema road safety campaign, Ms. Twumasi explained that while it may seem that the incentives for insurers to prevent road accidents come mainly from their responsibility to pay road accident claims, the company benefits were greater as many lives would be saved.

Triumph buys electric motorcycle manufacturer

Launched in 2004 by Ian Smith, who wanted to build an electric mountain bike for his son Oliver, OSET has sold over 40,000 bikes worldwide fitted with their in-house developed electric powertrains.

The acquisition of OSET is in line with Triumph’s strategy to enter the off-road segment, announced in 2020, and offers both companies the opportunity to share and benefit from the knowledge and experience of the other in their respective segments, allowing the two brands to develop internationally in parallel. .

Nick Bloor, CEO of Triumph, said: “We are delighted at the opportunity to partner with OSET Bikes: a dynamic brand that has been encouraging children to ride motorcycles for many years and is at the forefront the development of electric trial bikes for fun and competition. .

Ian Smith, CEO of OSET Bikes, said: “When we built that first ‘garage’ bike for my son, Oliver, I had no idea it would lead to this moment. We are all very excited about what the future holds for OSET within the Triumph family.

“The OSET brand will remain OSET and continue to serve the trials and dirt bike community. We are now in a better position to grow and innovate our range, while benefiting from the security of scale and market position that Triumph can offer OSET.

Muse treatment center on Hollywood drug delivery industry behind recent overdose deaths

/EIN News/ — Los Angeles, June 20, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Los Angeles, California –

Los Angeles, California – The convenience of meals delivered to homes, household items and many other products with just a few clicks of your cell phone has arrived in the world of drugs. But authorities in Hollywood, Calif., are warning that home-delivered drugs can come with something no one ever orders: arrest and even a fatal overdose.

Muse Treatment, a Los Angeles alcohol and drug rehabilitation center, urges drug addicts to avoid the dangerous service, noting that at least one person has been found dead in their home after ordering drugs over the phone. Its alleged dealer had a team of drivers to make the deliveries.

Investigators say the man purchased cocaine and oxycodone over the phone from the alleged drug dealer, who offered a full menu of substances including acid, ecstasy, mushrooms and several other drugs . Like any meal or shopping service, the dealer has added a delivery charge.

The client was found dead on his kitchen floor the following morning. He had apparently overdosed on the drug, which officials said was laced with fentanyl.

The victim’s death led to a thorough federal investigation that uncovered the drug delivery service the alleged trafficker was accused of running from his Hollywood apartment. Their job was made a little easier by the long trail of evidence she allegedly left: money collected through cash apps, records stored on laptops and cell phones.

The alleged delivery customer was one of nearly 100,000 Americans who died of drug overdoses in the year ending April 2021 — a record number — according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States. United States. His apparent death from fentanyl was a tragic end that is all too common for drug addicts. Dealers often add synthetic opioids to counterfeit prescription drugs because they are cheap and easy to obtain. But it packs a powerful high that is several times stronger than morphine. Many users are unable to deal with its effects. The drug is responsible for much of the record number of fatal overdoses. According to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, many of these pills are manufactured in Mexico and imported into the United States.

The Hollywood case wasn’t the first case of someone ordering drugs over the phone, but it’s part of a new twist in the drug trade. According to Interpol, the closures imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic have led many criminals to use food delivery services to cover their business of delivering drugs and other illegal goods. The international police agency said it had received reports from Irish, Malaysian, Spanish and British police that food delivery drivers were actually delivering drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, ketamine and ecstasy.

Spanish police have arrested seven people for using bicycles, motorbikes and cars to deliver marijuana, cocaine and other drugs, which they concealed in official meal delivery backpacks

In Ireland, police recovered 17 pounds of cocaine and two handguns from pizza boxes.

There have been no reports of drug cases in Europe leading to fatal overdoses, but the drug crisis isn’t limited to the United States, so it’s likely home delivery customers haven’t escaped. at risk.

When isolating at home due to lingering COVID fears, it’s tempting to just pick up the phone and call someone who can provide chemical comfort – just as one may have gotten into the habit of ordering high-calorie comfort foods. Instead, contact Muse Treatment to begin the recovery process for yourself or a loved one. Muse Treatment offers comprehensive treatment for alcohol dependence or other substance use disorders. Bajaj Auto recently inaugurated a new production plant in Akurdi Pune, Maharashtra. It will only produce electric vehicles such as Chetak. During the inauguration, Rajiv Bajaj said that people who have no business in electric vehicles are trying to be in space. He also said electric vehicle fires are not a problem, the problem is in the manufacturing process.

Rajiv Bajaj, President of Bajaj Auto said: “The problem is not the fire itself. This (such incidents) has also happened in vehicles with internal combustion engines. The problem is the underlying manufacturing process. What worries me the most is the environment that has fostered all this mad rush. Why are people who have no business in electric vehicles trying to get into the business? This needs to be corrected. Perhaps, if I may say so, the relevant government authorities have watered down the standards for electric vehicles. »

He added: This (electric vehicles are flooding the market) may also be partly due to incentives. Under cover of low-speed vehicles, you can bring any piece of vehicles from anywhere and put it on the road. You won’t have those scooters that catch fire? What are you waiting for?”

Okada is a business the government should not ban, but help regulate – Oyo ACOMORAN

In reaction to the latest motorcycle ban (Okada) in some large parts of Lagos State and the call for a ban in the South Western States, the Oyo State Chapter of the ‘Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle And Motorcycle Owners, Repairers and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN) has pleaded with the Oyo State Government not to ban the riders but to regulate their activities.

The association, which is the umbrella body for all commercial operators of motorcycles and tricycles, said the government should not ban its members, but regulate union activities and empower them, adding that the members rely on Okada’s business for survival.

Comrade Solomon Olugbode, Chairman of Oyo State ACOMORAN, speaking at a press briefing at the association’s state secretariat in Ibadan on Monday, explained that the association is aware of the motorbike ban in much of the Lagos States, as well as a possible influx. of these runners in Oyo State.

He said the society should understand that they are also part of the society that is ready to abide by the laws of the land.

His words: “Okada business is for the poor, we rely on this business for our day to day survival, only the poor can be seen with okada business, if the government bans us, our means of survival will be cut off stopped.

“I want the public, especially the elite, to understand that we are the product of society, we are not useless, worthless or meaningless. Society must understand that committing an atrocity depends on the person and not on their profession, a bad person is a bad person regardless of their profession, gender, ethnicity or religion.

While speaking out about the steps the association has taken to stop the influx of perpetrators of evil among runners.

He said: “The law does not prevent anyone from moving from one place to another. Our law does not allow us to detain anyone, we can only gather information and report to the police.

“The association is fully on the ground and our members have been informed to report any strange and suspicious movement to the competent services.

“As law-abiding people, we have also prepared our members to collect data from all runners for easy identification.”

The state president pleaded and urged the state government to help control the number of unions by regulating them and empower the incumbent union.

He further revealed, “As a means of permanent solution to the unruly behavior of some bikers in the state, we call on the government to regulate the number of bikers controlling unions in the state and empower self-reliance. because violence in commercial motorcycles and tricycles began in 2006 when the motorists union violently hijacked Okada parks.

Meanwhile, the syndicate also brought to the attention of the State Security Department and the Commissioner of Police an Okada Day being planned by a group of okada riders.

The President said that ACOMORAN, Oyo Chapter does not organize anything like this, adding that the participants are not members of the association but disbelievers who have extorted ignorant riders and caused confusion for selfish purposes.

Electric vehicles catch fire due to ‘crazy rush’ to get into business: Rajiv Bajaj

E-vehicles that catch fire show poor workmanship and India must avoid a “mad rush” for untested products, Rajiv Bajaj, chief executive of Bajaj Auto, said on Friday as he criticized “watered down standards”.

Electric scooter fires have been in the news this year, and last month a report by the state-run Defense Research and Development Organization caused faults in the batteries. Defects may have crept in because electric two-wheeler companies intentionally used inferior materials to cut costs, said The report.

“The problem is not the fire itself. It (such incidents) has also happened in vehicles with internal combustion engines. The problem is the underlying manufacturing process,” said Bajaj at the inauguration of the dedicated electrical branch of its subsidiary Chetak Technology Ltd. vehicle manufacturing plant at Akurdi near Pune.

“What concerns me the most is the environment that has fostered this mad rush. Why are people who have no business in the electric vehicle business trying to enter the business? It must be corrected. Perhaps, if I may say so, the relevant government authorities have watered down the standards for electric vehicles.” This (electric vehicles are flooding the market) may also be partly due to incentives,” he said, as quoted by PTI.

“Under the guise of low-speed vehicles, you can bring any piece of vehicles from anywhere and put it on the road. You won’t have those scooters catching fire? What are you waiting for,” he said according to the new agency.

The country aims to increase the share of electric scooters and motorcycles in total two-wheeler sales to 80% by 2030, from 2% currently. However, consumer confidence has been shaken by the nine reported incidents since last year of electric two-wheelers catching fire.

  • Aeonmotor uses HERE SDK to provide security alerts for its new CROXERA® M smart mirror, and step-by-step route guidance for its CROXERA® smart dashboard and associated mobile apps.
  • HERE Technologies is part of the CROXERA® Safety Internet-of-Vehicle Alliance with key industry players to collaborate on smart and safe technologies that will improve driver safety.

June 7, 2022

Beijing and Taipei – HERE Technologiesthe leading location data and technology platform, today announced that it is powering leading motorcycle manufacturer, aeonmotor Aftermarket recently launched CROXERA® M Smart Mirror with Safety Features, and its CROXERA® Smart Dashboard and CROXERA® Companion App, with Turn-by-Turn Route Guidance (TBT).

According to a market research report[1], the global “connected motorcycles” market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 46.9% from 2021 to 2027. A connected motorcycle is equipped with an internet-connected device that monitors and controls embedded systems, such as real-time navigation and traffic. , driver assistance systems and equipment status. The arrival of 5G and the increase in internet penetration have increased the demand from motorcyclists for this type of connected functionality.

Since 2018, the HERE SDK (software development kit) powered Aeonmotor’s smart dashboard known as CROXERA® and its associated mobile app of the same name to provide drivers with timely TBT navigation advice and speed limit warnings that adapt to changes in real time. This data provides passengers with an accurate estimated time of arrival and distance to destination integrated into their dashboard, without the need to reference a separate device.

Using a highly compressed proprietary data format, the HERE SDK quickly preloads maps while providing offline functionality such as route calculation, location search and TBT navigation.

In March 2022, Aeonmotor launched its new CROXERA® M smart rearview mirror and CROXERA® EDGE mobile device app. The HERE SDK has been extended to support these new products. For example, the CROXERA® M smart rear view mirror uses sensors to alert drivers via an LED icon and LED light bar if they are over a speed limit or when there is a speed camera nearby.

“Two-wheeled vehicles are an integral part of everyday life in many Asian countries, and driver safety has always been a hot topic. At Aeonmotor, we have sold over 23,000 bikes with HERE powered TBT navigation function. This is a feature that has been requested since HERE joined us,” said Charlie Chung, Executive Assistant of Aeonmotor. “After years of using the HERE SDK, we continue to be impressed with the data quality and flexibility that HERE offers. With HERE, we were able to differentiate ourselves from the competition and maintain our second place in the highly competitive electric scooter market.

Aiming to bring together industry expertise to collaborate on smart and safe technologies that will improve driver safety on the roads, Aeonmotor has formed the CROXERA® Safety Internet-of-Vehicle Alliance in 2021. HERE is one of the partners alongside key industry players such as AU Optronics (AUO), Micro-Star International (MSI), Microsoft Corporation and Sanyang Motor.

“HERE continues to play a vital role in the development of our smart mobility and our products. This is why we have decided to invite HERE to be part of the CROXERA® Safety Internet-of-Vehicle Alliance, where their expertise will allow us to better leverage technology to improve overall driver safety,” added Chung.

“Aeonmotor is a household brand known for incorporating the latest technology into its products. We are proud to enable Aeonmotor to expand its brand presence and support its international expansion through CROXERA®,” said Sammie Xi, Director and Head of Business for Greater China at HERE. “At the same time, being part of the CROXERA® Safety Internet-of-Vehicle Alliance is a testament to the evolution of our strategic partnership with Aeonmotor over the years. We look forward to continuing to support Aeonmotor and provide enhanced safety measures to drivers around the world. »
