The VW Scout is a brand revival too far | Axon Automotive Anorak

That seems odd, because VW has yet to offer any pickup models in the US, even its capable Amarok. Although it naturally already sells a number of different premium SUV passenger car models through its network of Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley franchise dealerships, some as electric vehicles only.

IH built its newest Scout model on the 21st October 1980, just as the “civilian” SUV market was beginning to take off, and also after showing an attractive future Scout concept for the following 1981 model year at various late fall US auto shows. In the mid-1980s, IH focused solely on the production of diesel engines, heavy trucks, buses and agricultural vehicles. The company had fallen on hard times, caused in large part by damaging union relations, but not helped by the loss of the Scout.

In 1991, IH’s previous business divisions were broken up and sold off, with its main truck manufacturing arm being acquired by rival American truck manufacturer Navistar in 1995. Following a factory move from Chicago to Warrenville, Illinois, Navistar has taken a timid step into the large SUV market with its International MTX. The giant SUV pickup fell apart, not helped by the fact that it was far too big and unsuitable for export roads and tastes (especially here in Europe). Given the enormous size and importance of the ever-expanding SUV segment in the United States, rumors circulated in the early 21st Century of a revival of the IH Scout model, but it never materialized.

Iconic British motorcycle brand Norton is back for good this time

Just like in the automotive world, some motorcycle names are too big to really fade away. Polaris, for example, managed to bring the Indian back about a decade ago. And we’re about to see BSA make a comeback. However, it’s not the only British motorcycle brand making a comeback. Things have been tough the past few years, but Norton Motorcycles is really, really ready to roll again.

Norton Motorcycles’ initial comeback didn’t go smoothly

Side Norton Commando 961 2019 | Adrian Bretscher/Getty Images for Breitling

Until the mid-2000s, Norton was one of many historic British motorcycle brands that were, well, history. An American, Kenny Dreer, had tried to resuscitate him and the iconic Commando, but the attempt came to nothing. However, in 2008 Stuart Garner and some investors bought the rights to the name and made plans for new bikes. And a few years later, the first of these new models, the Commando 961, went into production.

Unfortunately, things went downhill quickly after that. You see, Garner didn’t just reboot Norton: he also tied several non-motorcycling companies to the brand. One of them, Spondon, was a frame design company, which was good for the reborn bike maker. However, the other companies included a hotel business and a real estate company. And in addition to these companies, Garner was also the CEO of Manorcrest Limited, which organized pension funds.

In 2012 and 2013, Manorcrest set up several pension funds focused on Norton Motorcycles, with Garner as sole administrator. Although this is not problematic in itself, UK law limits the amount trustees can invest in these situations. Garner, however, basically funneled everything into Norton. But wait, there’s more.

After Norton filed for bankruptcy in 2019, financial investigators discovered that Garner had made some very shady deals. For example, Donington Hall, the mansion he supposedly bought as Norton’s HQ, was really his personal residence, RevZilla reports. Additionally, the money Garner used to buy the Norton Motorcycles name came from illegal tax evasion in the first place. And that’s only the beginning.

Long story short, Garner got away with a fine and a slap on the wrist while Norton Motorcycles went bankrupt. And so, it looked like the brand would join Matchless and Ariel in the history books. At least, until recently, it is.

The British bike brand now has a new CEO, owner and life lease

About a year after Norton went bankrupt, Indian motorcycle company TVS Motor bought the company and its assets for about $20 million. Soon after, he appointed a new CEO, Dr. Robert Hentschel, who promised the company was turning over a new leaf. And after TVS’ recent $125 million investment, those promises seem to be paying off.

As of this writing, Norton has two bikes in the works. The first is a redesigned version of the V4-powered superbike that Garner teased before his legal mess happened. Nicknamed “V4SV”, it features a 185 horsepower 1200cc V4, hand-welded aluminum chassis, slipper clutch, Brembo brakes and Ohlins suspension. And while the Manx and Carbon models have carbon fiber body panels, the latter also has carbon fiber wheels. Also, in addition to several riding modes, traction control and electronic quick-shifting, the V4SV has a rear-view camera.

The other upcoming Norton motorcycle is a cafe racer version of the V4SV. This V4CR has the same engine and chassis, although the rear subframe and seat are shorter, bike world reports. Also, like the V4SV Manx, it has Oz Racing forged alloy wheels. However, being a cafe racer, the V4CR has less bodywork, although it is still carbon fiber, as well as a redesigned dashboard, different air intakes and a new engine spoiler. .

In addition, Norton already has an operational factory. The company says the factory in Solihull, England can produce up to 8,000 motorcycles a year. And finally, he recently bought 55 of his classic models to start a heritage collection.

Will Norton Motorcycles return to the United States?

At the time of this writing, Norton has not confirmed whether its new motorcycles will arrive in the United States. However, the Commando 961 came here in small numbers, but not through dedicated dealerships. So once V4SV and V4CR production is fully launched, those bikes could be federalized for sale here.

Still, just like in the case of Buell, I’m sure many riders are happy to see Norton operational again.

Tesla brand threatened by Musk harassment allegation and criticism from Democrats

Elon Musk made a name for himself and Tesla by breaking the rules, but the billionaire’s latest comments on politics and a sexual harassment allegation against him that he says are false may hurt the brand in the eyes of some owners and employees. of cars.

Musk on Thursday denied a Business Insider report that he sexually harassed a flight attendant on a private jet in 2016, calling the person who made the claim a liar.

The day before, the CEO of Tesla, amid a controversial effort to buy Twitter Inc, said he would now vote Republican instead of Democrat and called Democrats a “party of division and hate”.

Tesla was also cut this week from the widely followed S&P 500 ESG index, which an index official said was due to issues including allegations of racial discrimination at the company and accidents related to his vehicles.

Musk responded by calling these environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings a “scam” and wondered how the index could bring down an electric car company while adding oil and gas producers. gas.

Tesla could not immediately be reached for comment.

While Musk has made headlines before – calling a critic a “pedo” on Twitter – the latest controversies again raise questions about whether his outspokenness will tarnish his sympathy. And – since Musk is so closely tied to Tesla – whether it will hurt the automaker’s sales, particularly in California.

The Left State is Tesla’s biggest market, accounting for nearly 40% of the company’s retail registrations in the United States last year, according to data from Experian. Tesla sales in California rose nearly 70% during the year and accounted for 6.5% of all vehicles in the state, according to the California New Car Dealers Association.

#BoycottTesla trended on Twitter on Friday with several people claiming they were canceling their car orders.

“In the past, I admired him for working to create a green company that transforms energy consumption. But he unfortunately becomes divisive as an attention-seeking troll and I no longer believe that he is dedicated to the quality of his products. I will be canceling my Tesla order,” said J Yeh, a Twitter user who describes herself as a lawyer who has lived in several cities, including Los Angeles.

“You have lost a potential customer,” said a Twitter user named Ute Bauer from Germany, adding in German: “To everyone reading this, cancel your orders.”

Reuters was unable to confirm whether any Tesla orders had been cancelled.

Many institutional investors may back Musk no matter what given the company’s strong performance, but that doesn’t mean some aren’t frustrated.

“They’re doing a lot of good things,” said Taylor Ogan, CEO of Snow Bull Capital, which owns Tesla stock. “It’s just disappointing when it’s tainted by Elon Musk’s antics. Elon Musk is the best thing for Tesla and the worst thing for Tesla.”

A Tesla employee, who asked not to be identified, expressed frustration that Musk’s efforts outside of Tesla appear to be hurting the automaker’s stock. “Society has to do something to fix the problem,” he said.

Tesla shares fell nearly 9% on Friday, knocking about $66 billion off Tesla’s market value and putting the stock at its lowest level since last August, with analysts citing “risks of distraction of the Twitter agreement. Musk assured people Thursday that Tesla was constantly on his mind.

If the discussion around water coolers at work focused on the sexual harassment allegation against Musk rather than Tesla products, the end result could be “corrosive” to the Tesla brand, said John Smith, former vice president. group president at GM who led global product planning.

Employees at Tesla and SpaceX could also become “a little shaken and angry” over Musk’s anti-Democratic comments, as staff at tech companies in California tend to be more liberal, said Jason Stomel, founder of the company. executive technology talent agency.

NASA administrator Bill Nelson, which relies on Musk’s SpaceX to fly its astronauts into space, told Reuters on Thursday that Musk has a strong executive team at the spacecraft maker and that the partnership of the agency with the company “went without a hitch”.

And Musk still has a lot of fans online. Twitter user @JVega103 said he was a Republican who owned a Tesla and had just signed up for Tesla Solar Panels. “Thank you for all you do,” the user tweeted.

That has left some industry watchers wondering if Musk and Tesla would simply brush off these latest controversies, as they have in the past.

“Is Elon Musk now mad, or mad as a fox? He deserved the benefit of the doubt because he often plays chess while the rest of us play checkers,” said Erik Qualman, a professor at Northwestern University. “As Musk himself said on ‘Saturday Night Live’, ‘What, did you think I would be normal?’”

Benelli will present the Keeway motorcycle brand in India tomorrow

Benelli has been in India for quite some time as one of the many premium motorcycle manufacturers. But the Italian motorcycle manufacturer is now gearing up to introduce its sibling to the country. Benelli will present Keeway in India tomorrow. Keeway, in case you don’t know, is a Hungarian motorcycle manufacturer owned by Qianjinag, a Chinese two-wheeler brand that also owns Benelli. Keeway is currently available in several international markets, including Europe, Thailand, Chile, Malaysia, Pakistan, etc. The motorcycle manufacturer’s range mainly consists of 125cc motorcycles in different body styles such as naked streetfighter, cruiser, biker, etc.

Given Keeway’s 125cc range of bikes, we expect it to help Benelli cater to customers looking for entry-level sportbikes. Benelli, India’s portfolio includes 250cc and 500cc motorcycles.

88386381 Keeway Superlight

Keeway’s global range includes 125cc motorcycles such as RKF 125cc E5 (a naked streetfighter) and Superlight 125 (a cruiser). However, we do not know with which bikes the Hungarian brand will enter the Indian two-wheeler market.

For reference, Keeway RKF has a 124cc liquid-cooled engine producing 12hp with 10Nm while the Superlight has a 124cc air-cooled unit to produce 10.45hp at 9000rpm and 10Nm of torque maximum. Both of these bikes come with a five-speed gearbox. Keeway RKF is likely to be a rival to the KTM 125 Duke and rides on inverted forks with monoshock. The Keeway Superlight, however, uses conventional forks with dual rear shocks.

Harley-Davidson becomes India’s best-selling premium motorcycle brand

logo-3-e1633446435798-4

Harley-Davidson has reported an increase in sales as it regains the top spot among premium motorcycles in India. The American manufacturer, which announced an unprecedented exit from India, followed by a re-entry alongside Hero MotoCorp in 2020, has since been on the road to renewal. Data provided by SIAM indicates that Harley-Davidson sold 601 motorcycles in fiscal year 2022, of which 531 units were sold in the 1,000cc and larger two-wheeler segment. The company saw 37% year-over-year growth. In comparison, only 206 units were sold in the same period last year.

Compared to other premium motorcycle brands, Harley outsold Triumph motorcycles which sold 336 units. Kawasaki sold 283 units, Suzuki sold 233 and Honda sold 71 in the 1000cc and larger motorcycle segment. Sales of the American brand come mainly from its new launches, the Pan America 1250 adventure tourer and the Sportster S cruiser and mark a revolution, both in terms of platform and segment for the manufacturer.

It should also be noted that much of Harley’s previous sales in India were driven by entry-level offerings such as the Street 750, Iron 883 and Forty-Eight, which are assembled locally.

Electric Motion is the first electric motorcycle brand to survive Scottish conditions at SSDT 2022 | thepack.news

Electric Motion riders Matthew Alpe (British importer at Inch Perfect Trials) and current e-trial world champion Gaël Chatagno wanted to demonstrate the enormous potential of their Epure electric motorcycles during the SSDT 2022. Their Epure were perfectly prepared for the various difficulties of the race, propelled by their Technical Director under the wise advice of Marc Colomer. With 2 motorcycles in the race and after six days with the same 2 motorcycles on the finish line, in perfect condition and without problems, Electric Motion has proven that its technology is certainly not inferior to traditional motorcycles in these difficult conditions.

EM’s goal was to break into the top 20. Gael finished in 19th place and won the ‘top 50’ award, for your information Matthew finished in the top third of the standings.

Gael won:

  • the prize for the first non-Englishman, therefore the best Frenchman of the event
  • the first prize in the category “up to 200cm3”
  • the 3rd ranking of the best “new comer”

electric_motion_ssdt_2022_4-1024x819-1

Gael: “It was a great week and this legendary race was a great experience! I have heard of it since I was very young. It’s like a dream come true: 6 long days, with interzones sometimes at more than 180 km/day in the middle of the mythical Scottish moors (large wet fields). For the whole team, it’s like a small dream come true, seeing our work compete in a real natural environment like Scotland and its streams. The bike ran perfectly. Didier prepared the bike perfectly for this extreme race. Zero problem, we arrived on time every day whether it was me or Matthew Alpe, as well as his entire Inch Perfect Trials team who put me in the best conditions, to end the days as easily as possible, joining the race without worrying about logistics.

electric_motion_ssdt_2022_5-1024x819-1 electric_motion_ssdt_2022_6-1024x819-1

A great week with a few days where things got a little tough like Thursday with lots of rain and a very long and difficult interzone. We have achieved our objective, that is to say to finish in the top 20 (19th), best foreign driver (and therefore 1st in France). I was also rewarded for my 1st place in the “up to 200 cm3” category, and also top 3 in the newcomers category.

electric_motion_ssdt_2022_9-1024x819-1

Both bikes ran perfectly, Matthew’s too. Using the PRB “R” was very important for recharging the battery on descents. When I was tired, I let the bike run at torque without holding the clutch. This is a great advantage with its motor skills, without being afraid of stalling.

electric_motion_ssdt_2022_8-1024x819-1

It was great teamwork, Matthew had experience in this race that I could learn from, he finished in the first third and that’s a great result. In terms of batteries, we had fairly tight logistics because we had to systematically recharge the batteries as soon as our assistance picked them up at the “petrol” supply point.

Scout, the new Volkswagen brand of electric pickups and SUVs in the United States

Volkswagen, like almost all automakers, is fully committed to electrification. And that plan, he recently confirmed, includes the creation of a new independent brand through which it will sell a family of all-electric products in the United States. They will be ready in 2026.

Also read: Volkswagen to invest $250 million in Argentina

The brand It will be called Scout and the first models will be an SUV and a pick-up. The company gave this information and published the first official sketch which gives an idea of what these products will look like, although it is really too early to have more details.

The new Scout brand will also have an electric SUV.

The important thing is that it is thus confirmed that the German brand, at least in the USA, will have a direct competitor for the electric “apartments” of Ford, Chevy and Tesla, among others. As for the SUV, it will be a major competitor for the new Ford Bronco, in the different versions marketed, and for the emblematic Jeep Wrangler.

From the automaker, they pointed out that the Scout models will be independent from the rest of the VW range and that the first prototypes will be ready Next year.

In Argentina, Amarok update

volkswagen announced last week that it will invest $250 million in Argentina to manufacture Ducati motorcycles, nationalize auto parts and update amarok. As is often the case, the projections that imagine what the final design of the pick-up could look like soon appeared.

The Brazilian portal KDesing was encouraged to draw the design of the Amarok 2023 in its V6 version (it’s the most powerful in the range) and gave it new alloy wheels, slight changes to the bumper and end-to-end LED optics in the front, among other details.

2623grxgr5bpdobwyn3gta33yy

Volkswagen Amarok 2023. Projection: KDesign.

The German brand has not unveiled images of the future Amarok. For now, Pablo Di Si, the president of VW in South America, anticipated: “We will modernize it, update it and add more technology to it so that it can be sold in Argentina and other Latin American markets”.
