Steve McQueen’s Husqvarna 400 Cross – Sports Illustrated Cover Bike

Arguably the most famous Husqvarna owned by Steve McQueen, it was the bike he rode on the now-legendary cover of the August 23, 1971 issue of Sports Illustrated magazine.

McQueen and his Husqvarnas were inseparable, he switched to them after extensively riding Triumph desert sleds for most of the 1960s. When the Huskies arrived with their punchy two-strokes and incredibly low curb weights , McQueen was hooked.

Fast facts – Steve McQueen’s Husqvarna 400 Cross

  • The Husqvarna 400 Cross was released in 1969 as a replacement for the Husqvarna 360. It featured a number of improvements over its predecessor, including an all-welded frame and a more powerful 400cc two-stroke engine.
  • This new model was an immediate success, Bengt Aberg rode his 400 Cross to win the 1969 and 1970 500cc World Championships. brutal races in the Southern California desert.
  • For many, the Husqvarna represents the shift that occurred in the late 1960s between the heavier four-strokes and the lighter two-strokes that would come to dominate off-road racing.
  • Probably the world’s most famous Husqvarna 400 Cross is the one ridden by Steve McQueen in that timeless Sports Illustrated cover from 1971 (pictured below).

The mighty Swedish Husqvarnas

Husqvarna was founded centuries before the invention of the motorcycle, it was first formed near the town of Huskvarna in Sweden in 1689 to manufacture firearms, including muskets. The company’s modern logo is a reference to this, it’s designed to look like you’re looking at the open iron sights of a gun.

It was the cover that greeted those who purchased the August 23, 1971, issue of Sports Illustrated magazine. The motorcycle he rides is the one shown in the article that is now for sale.

Over the course of Husqvarna’s history they branched out, first into making bicycles in the 1800s and then into making motorcycles from 1903. By 1918 they were making the whole motorcycle in-house, including including engines that had previously been imported, that was around the time. they first started competing in cross-country and long-distance motorcycle racing.

The Swedish company had a significant number of successes on the race tracks in the mid-20th century. They beat Norton and scored a one-two at the 1931 Swedish Grand Prix with drivers Ragnar Sundqvist and Gunnar Kalen.

In the 1950s the company focused largely on off-road and motocross events, Rolf Tibblin won the 1959 Motocross Championship on his 250cc Husqvarna and the 1960 500cc Motocross Championship was won by Bill Nilsson on a Husqvarna at four times.

The development of advanced two-stroke motocross bikes in the 1960s propelled Husqvarna to the forefront of the off-road motorcycle world and made its red and chrome fuel tanks world famous.

The Husqvarna 400 Cross became one of the most important motorcycles ever made by the Swedish company, winning the 500cc World Championships of 1969 and 1970 as well as countless individual races.

The arrival of Steve McQueen

Many people don’t know that Steve McQueen was a truly competitive motorcycle racer in his day, he wasn’t just for show or just for fun, he was a competitive rider who would have paid his way through the running theater school on weekends.

McQueen represented the United States as a member of the USA Six Days Trial team in 1964 alongside the great Bud Ekins. He competed in a number of events during the 1960s and 1970s including the Baja 1000, Mint 400 and Elsinore Grand Prix.

In 1968, McQueen reportedly attended an event and saw Bengt Aberg ride his brand new 1968 Husqvarna 360 to victory. He bought the bike under him and immediately began to get acquainted with it.

Steve McQueen’s Husqvarna 400 Cross

It was clear from the start that this new lightweight two-stroke machine was superior to his old Triumph TR6C desert sled, and he became an avid Husqvarna rider.

Movie above: This is the original trailer for the landmark motorcycle documentary “On Any Sunday” from 1971. McQueen partly financed and starred in the film, it was later nominated for Best Documentary.

As soon as the improved 400 Cross became available in 1969 McQueen bought himself one, it’s the bike you see here, and he chose it as his bike to ride for his Sports Illustrated cover in 1971.

1971 also marked the release of the Oscar-nominated motorcycle documentary “On Any Sunday” by director Bruce Brown. The film would introduce a wide variety of different motorcycle sports to an entirely new audience, from cross country racing to flat track and everything in between.

McQueen partially financed the film through his own production company, Solar Productions, and he himself is famous in the film at a few points, including in the film’s famous final stages.

Mecum is now offering the McQueen Sports Illustrated Husqvarna for sale at its Houston auction in late March. Interestingly, it is offered without reserve, if you would like to learn more or register to bid, you can click here to visit the list.

The Big Rise in Gasoline (and Diesel) Prices Begins Today

2020 and 2021 have been difficult for all of us. With the way it’s going, 2022 is likely to be even tougher, especially for motorists, as fuel prices have continued to soar.

Yesterday the oil companies Shell, Caltex, CleanFuel and Seaoil announced that there will be a big increase in the price of fuel today, March 8, 2022. For us bikers, there will be a further increase in the price of gasoline PHP 3.60/litre. , while diesel fuel will see a huge price hike of PHP 5.85/litre.

Other oil companies are expected to follow suit.

According to oil companies, the conflict in Eastern Europe has affected the world price of oil and is approaching 100 USD/barrel to date.

According to the Ministry of Energy, if Dubai crude reaches USD 120/barrel, the estimated cost per liter of gasoline here in the country could reach PHP 78.33, while diesel could reach PHP 69.00 per liter. .

Proposed Fuel Excise Tax Suspension

Yesterday, members of the Philippine Congress supported the proposal to suspend the excise tax levied on fuel to mitigate the impact of continued fuel price increases.

“If you want an immediate impact, not only on the transport sector but also on all citizens, then we must pass Bill 10488 as soon as possible,” said Bayan Muna representative Carlos Zarate.

Zarate was referring to a measure to suspend certain provisions of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act (TRAIN Act) which imposed a tax of PHP 10/litre on gasoline, a tax of PHP 6, PHP 00/litre on diesel, a tax of PHP 5.00/litre on kerosene, and PHP 3.00/kg on LPG.

Is it high time to switch to electric motorcycles? Or maybe use those legs more while riding a bike?

2016-moto-guzzi-stelvio-ntx-on-any-moto-2

4 Sale / Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2016: Italian classic or oddity?

(If you think this week’s 4 Sale column was inspired by Neil’s Moto Guzzi tribute that aired earlier this week, you’re right).

The Moto Guzzi V85 TT made a big splash when it debuted in 2019. An old-school air/oil-cooled ADV machine, resembling the old-school desert bikes of the 1980s and 1990s? It was an oddity at that time, as all manufacturers were switching to liquid-cooled engines. Even BMW had gone water-boxing, which some had predicted as a sign of the apocalypse (and seeing how the past two years have gone, maybe they were right?).

Maybe we shouldn’t have been so surprised, though; Moto Guzzi was just replacing the Stelvio adventure tourer, which really hadn’t been out of the line for so long. In classic Guzzi fashion, it wasn’t about abandoning an original idea, it was just about taking it forward.

Dawn of the Stelvio

The original Stelvio hit the market in 2008 as a competitor to the GS range. It was more or less the same idea…or was it? Instead of a flat-twin, the Moto Guzzi came with the trademark transverse V-twin (to avoid all the shouting of “It’s a longitudinal V-twin, silly”, remember this is what Moto Guzzi themselves call this engine layout – Ed.). And, instead of pretending to travel in the desert, Moto Guzzi named their motorcycle after the legendary Stelvio Pass. Very adventurous and all, high in the Alps, but also cobbled and civilized. In fact, the exact kind of place you might expect to find a big-bore adventure bike, followed by a stop at a cafe, then a fancy restaurant for dinner. It seems that Moto Guzzi has understood its market very well.

Back when manufacturers were still making wide-eyed fat bikes. Personally, I always thought the Stelvio was a looker. Photo: on any motorcycle

2016-moto-guzzi-stelvio-ntx-on-any-moto-9-750x563-1

Uhhhhh, what’s up with the paint on the tank? Photo: on any motorcycle

How does it compare to the BMW competition of its time? Many specs were similar. The air/oil-cooled twin had a displacement of 1151 cc and was rated at 103 horsepower at 7250 rpm and 83 lb-ft of torque at 5800 rpm. Those numbers were slightly lower than the 2008 BMW R1200 GS, close enough that no one with a loaded bike really noticed. The Stelvio featured a six-speed gearbox and shaft drive, just like its German-made rival.

However, the Stelvio only weighed a hair under 600 lbs when fully fueled, and the R1200 GS came

in just over 500 lbs as standard (the Adventure model was still 60 lbs). Ooooh, this Italian bike seems to have been a pig, then?

Not really. It just wasn’t aimed at the same capabilities as the GS, especially the Adventure model. The Stelvio came with 19-17 wheels and Pirelli Scorpion tires; early models had spoked rims, then Moto Guzi switched to cast rims for the NTX model, then rear.

2016-moto-guzzi-stelvio-ntx-on-any-moto-6-450x338-1

With these wheels and tyres, Moto Guzzi was telling its buyers, “Listen, you can explore off-road if you want, but it’s not an enduro, so don’t do anything too stupid.” And most buyers got the message. That said, when I was involved with the Fundy Adventure Rally, a longtime participant showed up on a Stelvio every year and absolutely whipped it. Eventually it moved on to something more sensible (and boring), and I saw this Stelvio in the classifieds after that. I, uh, avoided; I knew what that bike had been through.

So why buy a Stelvio?

Like all Moto Guzzi’s, the Stelvio had a reputation for being a good all-around bike to cover long miles in comfort, with a very nice engine. And, at least in its early years, some riders thought it was a bit simpler than a BMW, so easy to work with. And some riders just didn’t want BMWs. The Stelvio had a pretty decent production run, selling from 2008 to 2016, and during those years there wasn’t as much competition in the big-bore ADV market. No doubt it also helped sell some Stelvio.

In 2009, here is what Original review from Motorcycle.com noted:

The Stelvio 1200 NTX is a well-equipped tourer with large, strong saddlebags and ABS fitted as standard. All of the extras available on the NTX cost around 1,000 euros (US$1,400) more than a standard Stelvio. Both versions get the 2009 second-generation Quattro Valvole engine, though, but the extra protection and those sexy aluminum saddlebags are worth it. The air-cooled 1151cc V90 is a gem and makes for a relaxed yet still sporty touring experience just the way you like it. The extra torque was welcome in the high alpine passes.

However, even though the bike ran perfectly, there were some annoying issues for some owners. From my friend Steve Bond’s review of the NTX model in 2012 (RIP, Bondo):

The Stelvio has so much potential to be an adventure grand tourer, but the boys of Valpolicella better get back to the drawing board because, while the basic platform is great, the details are somewhat lacking.

The adjustable traction control is nice (and both it and the traction control can be turned off if you’re brave enough to venture far from the pavement), but deciphering how to adjust it is like translating the Dead Sea Scrolls from the original Hebrew. . Ah, the Italians.

The Stelvio comes with a switch for the heated grips, and the wiring… and the icon that lights up on the dash showing the three heat levels you’ve chosen. But, while headlamps are standard on the NTX pack, the heated grips themselves are optional. Ask potential owners what they would rather have as standard – superfluous lights or warm hands. Ah, the Italians.

The instrument cluster is excellent, the speedometer and tachometer are easy to read and there is plenty of additional information on fuel consumption, average and maximum speeds etc. But when you reset one of these functions (like average fuel economy), everything else will also return to zero. Ah, the Italians.

Ah, the Italians indeed. Their bikes look good, they’re fun to ride, but you can still expect quirky features and handling. If you’re thinking of buying a Stelvio, keep this in mind. At least ADVrider has a very strong thread on the Stelvio in the forums, and if you run into any annoying duds, you should be able to find answers there.

2016-moto-guzzi-stelvio-ntx-on-any-moto-2-750x563-1

Aside from the paint issues and some crusting on the headers, it’s a pretty decent machine. It’s worth $10,000, though? It’s up to you. Photo: on any motorcycle

This bike here?

The machine in these photos is for sale at On Any Moto in Tucson, Arizona. It is a 2016 model, with 14,248 miles on the odometer. The asking price is $9,499.

Is this a fair price? Shop around, and you might do better, but this bike looks clean, and we’re in the midst of COVID-nomics. It certainly doesn’t sound like a screaming deal, but what is it, these days? If you want to call the store and haggle a bit, the website is here.

Synopsis

It was a boon for the government and oil companies when crude prices averaged around USD 20 in FY21. Not only have taxes been increased on fuel, but prices have also been increased for 76 days. In addition, India was buying crude at the time at an average of USD 19 to fill its strategic reserves. Time to pass on some benefits to the common man?

TOTM March: Discounted Ridley bikes, new Shimano shoes, Wahoo electric pedals and roller launch, and much more

This month we have discounted Ridley frames, new Shimano shoes spotted in the wild and the curious new handlebar hack from Tim Wellens. We go into detail on the most recent developments regarding the Australian Pursuit Team’s broken handlebars at the Tokyo Olympics and update you on Wahoo’s launch of its Powrlink Zero trainer and Wahoo Kickr Rollr.

Finally, we wrap things up with a look at this edition’s Bike of the Month, the Pearson Summon the Blood – a titanium gravel bike featuring Classified’s innovative two-speed hub gear.

More affordable Ridley aero and climbing bikes

Ridley offers more affordable models of its Noah and Helium bikes, the brand’s aero and lightweight product lines respectively.

The new frames are said to retain the same ride quality and features as their more expensive counterparts – the increased weight from the carbon change will be the trade-off for the lower list price.

That said, the new Helium frames are said to weigh less than 1000 grams, which is still very respectable, although of course not at the cutting edge of lightweight frames. The Helium SLX Disc has a claimed weight of 780g, for context.

Pricing starts at £2,909 / €3,199 / $4,229 for the Ridley Helium, while the Noah starts at £3,369 / €3,699 / $4,929. You can find more details at Ridley’s website this way.

New Shimano road shoes spotted

Donning the feet of Mathieu van der Poel, we’ve spotted what appears to be an update to Shimano’s range topping the S-Phyre 902 road shoes – which we’ll take a punt and suggest they will be called S-Phyre 903.

The differences appear to be quite subtle, with more perforations for ventilation on the newer model and more devious lace routing – presumably to help distribute tension more evenly.

We’re set for a number of shoe releases this year, with a potential new S-Works model having been spotted earlier during the Saudi tour.

The Tim Wellens handlebar hack

Since the UCI’s ban on the “puppy paws” or “invisible aero bars” position, where a rider rests their forearms on top of their bars, Tim Wellens – a longtime proponent of the position – had to go back to board drawing.

The solution Wellens seems to have found is to place a few inserts under his handlebar tape to help the position of the “aero hoods”—where a rider holds the hoods with their arms parallel to the ground—more easily.

It gives an unusual look, but it seems to work for him. Perhaps more pertinently, he doesn’t appear to be breaking UCI rules – for now at least.

For the full story on Wellens’ bike setup and all the details, you can find it here.

AusCycling apologizes for broken handlebar horror

Sadly, some of the most enduring images of the Tokyo Olympics will be of Alex Porter collapsing heavily after his handlebars snapped at 60km/h during the qualifying laps of the team pursuit.

After publishing a report on the incident, AusCycling apologized to “Alex and his fellow riders, the entire Australian Olympic team and the Australian public, who all had a right to expect better” . It was also acknowledged that a “lack of adequate processes and policies meant that issues were not detected and corrected before the team raced at the Games”.

14 recommendations were put forward by mechanical and aeronautical engineer John Baker, who produced the report, along with specific takeaways: that the national track cycling team provided “inadequate specifications for bespoke handlebars” as well as not “performing adequate fatigue testing.”

The bars’ manufacturer, Melbourne-based Bastion Cycles, was also named in the report and received five recommendations, including a call to review design and production quality assurance procedures. The equipment in question was his basic CA-06 bar, which unsurprisingly is no longer available.

Our full story on the report can be found here.

Wahoo has released two big product launches, the first being a power meter version of its Speedplay pedals. This has been expected for a while now – and has been on the wishlist for even longer.

They use a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and last for 75 hours, while accuracy is +/- 1% with no calibration required. The stack height has been increased from 11.5mm to 13mm to accommodate the pods, making it taller than Favero Assioma (10.5mm) and Garmin Rally (12.2mm).

A longer spindle length for the Powrlink Zero – 55mm compared to 53mm for the standard Speedplay Zero – also slightly increases the Q-factor compared to the competition. Garmin pedals stick with 53mm while Assioma measures 54mm.

Claimed weight is 276g double-sided and 250g single-sided, while the price comes in at £849.99/$999.99 double-sided and £549.99/$649.99 single-sided.

Wahoo says it’s taken a traditional design and envisioned it for the Kickr Rollr offering an option for those who want to combine “the convenience and natural ride feel of rollers with the benefits of strength and connectivity. controlled”.

Since Wahoo is also a manufacturer of direct-drive smart trainers, it would be unwise to criticize them, but what it does say is that the Kickr Rollr is “designed to fit a wide range of body sizes. of chassis and tires via adjustable wheelbase with quick-release clamp… easy to get on and off bikes, making it ideal for athletes who want to quickly transition from indoor training to riding outdoors, as well than for households where multiple cyclists use the same trainer.

Pricing comes in at £699.99 / $799.99 and more information on both can be found in our launch story here.

Bike of the Month: Summon the Blood

This month, for Bike of the Month, we have the Pearson Summon The Blood, a snappy titanium gravel bike designed for both shorter gravel blasts and lighter bikepacking adventures.

It comes equipped with the underside of the downtube mount, top tube mounts and mounts for a rear rack – in addition to the two inside the main triangle. The geometry is snappier, with short (for a gravel bike) 425mm chainstays and a particularly steep 73-degree head angle in a size medium.

However, it still offers plenty of clearance, capable of handling 45mm x 700c – and wider still at 650b.

Pearson is one of a growing number of brands offering builds with Classified’s two-speed hub. We were quite impressed with the system when we tested it previously, offering a marked improvement over shifting a front derailleur.

The high price means it’s not a product we’d recommend to everyone, but if you’ve got the cash to spare – and if you’re not too attached to any particular wheelset – it’s worth definitely worth a try.

We will publish our opinion in the coming weeks, in the meantime you can see the bike on Pearson’s website this way

Sale of British Golden Age motorcycles for Bonhams Amelia Island

Those browsing Bonhams’ catalog for its Amelia Island auction might have noticed that a large percentage of the folder is taken up by classic British motorcycles.

The reason is the inclusion of the Charles Jacobs Collection, 46 motorcycles amassed over the years by the late Jacksonville, Florida resident and regular entrant in the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance motorcycle class.
